What truly sets "Guardians of the Dafeng" apart is its heart.

"Guardians of the Dafeng" is an absolute masterpiece that has redefined my expectations for modern dramas! From the very first episode, I was drawn into the vibrant world of Dafeng City, where humor, action, and mystery intertwine seamlessly.

Dylan Wang delivers a phenomenal performance as Xu Qi An, embodying the character with such charm and relatability that you can’t help but cheer him on. The supporting cast is equally impressive, each bringing their unique flair to the story and creating a dynamic ensemble that keeps things fresh and exciting.

The writing is sharp and witty, with clever dialogue that had me laughing out loud. The comedic timing is impeccable, providing just the right balance to the more intense moments of the plot. I found myself invested not only in the main storyline but also in the character arcs, which are thoughtfully developed throughout the series.

Visually, the show is stunning! The cinematography captures the essence of the setting beautifully, and the production quality is evident in every scene. The action sequences are thrilling, keeping you at the edge of your seat, while the lighter moments provide a delightful contrast.

What truly sets "Guardians of the Dafeng" apart is its heart. The themes of friendship, loyalty, and justice resonate deeply, making it more than just a typical crime drama. Each episode leaves you with a sense of fulfillment and a yearning for more.

In conclusion, "Guardians of the Dafeng" is a must-watch for anyone looking for a captivating and entertaining series. It’s a perfect blend of humor, action, and emotional depth, earning it a well-deserved 10/10! Don’t miss out on this incredible journey!

Funny and intrigue, perfect entertainment.

Yes, it's comedy-drama, and it packs interesting storyline. It keeps me wanting more after each episode.

The female lead acts dumb and funny in the first half of the story and does not have much screen time. Her character grows after the 20th episode, and I am looking forward to more of her screen time in the second half.

Love ML. He is the center of the whole story.

If you like a good laugh and a story that keeps you coming back for more. This is the one for you.

well-crafted story with rich characters and breathtaking visuals

"Guardians of Dafeng" has been nothing short of a spectacular journey from the very first episode! As I reached episode 23, I can confidently say this series has captured my heart and imagination in ways few others have.

The storytelling is masterfully crafted, weaving together intricate plots and character arcs that keep you on the edge of your seat. Each episode builds on the last, creating a rich tapestry of suspense, humor, and emotional depth. The pacing is spot-on, with just the right balance of action and character development.

The characters are incredibly well-developed; you can’t help but root for them. Each one has their own unique backstory and motivations, making them relatable and compelling. The chemistry among the cast is palpable, adding layers of authenticity to their interactions.

Visually, the animation is stunning! The art style is vibrant and beautifully detailed, bringing the world of Dafeng to life in a way that feels immersive and enchanting. Coupled with a fantastic soundtrack, it enhances the overall experience and draws you deeper into the story.

The themes explored in the series are profound, touching on friendship, sacrifice, and the struggle between good and evil. It’s not just entertainment; it leaves you with something to think about long after the credits roll.

In summary, "Guardians of Dafeng" is a must-watch for anyone who loves a well-crafted story with rich characters and breathtaking visuals. I wholeheartedly give it a 10/10! I can’t wait to see where the journey goes next!

Lighthearted drama

Cute and funny. It’s not a deep-thinking kind of show and I’m fine with that.
I’m a fan of Wang Hedi; he does a good job here. It feels like they tailored the character for him. There are little tongue-in-cheek jokes and even a reference to his song which I find hilarious.
Aside from the ML, there are many other characters that are great. Love the family dynamics. So far so good.

Must Watch

I found it very funny, entertaining, high quality and production , and absolutely fantastic performances by Dylan Wang. He was the highlight and super star for the drama. You can tell how relaxed, nature and smooth his acting was as the main male lead Xu Qi An. I found myself looking forward each day for the new episodes to be available on Tencent. The only complaint I have was they only released 2 new episodes for us to watch per day since the premiere. I can't wait to watch more episodes.

Refreshing and Must Watch 2025

I found this drama to be different from the others. When it premiered on December 28, 2024, I was so excited, and sure enough, from the very first episode, it had me laughing out loud. Dylan, as Xu Qi An, nailed the role, and I believe this role was made for him. Some scenes where they were laughing felt so natural and real, almost as if they weren’t acting at all. Every day, I eagerly look forward to each new episode of this drama.

As the episodes progress, the storyline becomes increasingly intricate and thrilling. The CGI, along with several scenes set in the mountains and deserts, showcases breathtakingly real landscapes, not CGI, and they’re stunning. This drama truly has outstanding visuals, making it feel like watching a movie. The opening song is also a perfect match, even though it’s the first time a Chinese drama in the Wuxia genre uses a rap-style opening song.

All the cast members are incredible, giving their absolute best. I’m thrilled that Dylan took on a different role and expanded his acting range. He is so natural in the comedy scenes too.

This review may contain spoilers

that's how you slowly build a plot

Not without flaws, Guardians of the Dafeng still has its strong points and I'd say that, up to episode 24, the pros of watching it exceed by far the cons.
It's a silly, lighthearted drama and it is well aware of it, so it never falls in the cringe zone, but when it needs to get serious... the tone seamlessly shifts to seriousness – although it usually never lasts for a whole episode.
That depends both on how well crafted the writing is and the solidity of the acting.
In fact, if not all actors, most of them can easily switch from a silly, humorous role to a more grave and emotional one, from exaggerated and comically expressive scenes to sobriety and subtlety.
They all seem to be having fun with their roles, so (except for the first three/four episodes), their comedy feels spontaneous and natural and they all have great chemistry with each other.
Yes, some characters do feel more cartoonish (nearly 90% comic relief) rather than real people, but when I realized it is done on purpose and it's not due to poor writing or bad acting, I felt more at ease watching them and some scenes were actually funny.
Do they overdue it? Sometimes, yes, but it's consistent with the overall light vibe of the drama and it fits perfectly with everything else, once you get used to it.
HOWEVER, I personally don't like how the protagonist, Xu Qi An, is always presented as infallible and perfect in everything he says and does, loved, protected and revered by nearly every single person he meets (and hated to the extreme by few). He feels too much like a Mary Sue on too many occasions, but I also understand it's purposeful and probably (hopefully) there is a reason for that, given the other characters are more "balanced" in their relationships, qualities and flaws.
I heard many people aren't happy with Dylan Wang dubbing himself and are complaining about his accent and line delivery, but, perhaps because I am not a native speaker, I believe his Mandarin and voice work perfectly with the type of character he is portraying. After all, Qi An is a young man from our days ending up in a fantasy past, it makes sense for him to speak like a person from 2020s and not like a nobleman from ancient times.
Speaking of which.
Perhaps he should have been more shocked about ending up in a past with magic and monsters.
We never see him remembering or missing his old life, never a mention of the family and friends he left behind. He slipped into his new identity without struggle and regrets, as if THAT is his reality, not the modern times. This detail always feels weird and a bit off, to me.
Are you telling me he was absolutely alone and held no person dear to his heart? With that personality of his? We see he has no problems getting along with people and gets very protective of the ones he loves, does that mean he just as quickly forgets all about others?
I would also love for him not to get silly and funny right after a traumatic experience. I love how this drama bounces right back to its original genre, never forgetting where it comes from, but sometimes... they should stay in the serious zone a little longer. They know how to write and present tragedy, but they really make it very short-lived.
A character “dying” and playing pranks pretending to be a zombie the moment they come back does feel a bit off, no matter how in-character and in-the story it is.
Always related to the characters of this drama, I think the writers rely a little too much on misunderstandings, small and big, and it gets tiring after a while.
But that's about it with the things I'm not liking that much.

Now, onto what I am absolutely loving.

1. Guardians of the Dafeng really takes time exploring relationships and building family and friendships. I'm a huge fan of such tropes and we can really see characters getting close and slowly becoming friends, spending time together and just hanging out. I love it, I really love seeing it. Just friends being friends.

2. When I watch this drama, it feels like I'm reading a novel and I'm moving from chapter to chapter.
The viewer is slowly eased into this new fantasy world (in the first half of the drama, the element of magic and martial arts is marginal and only appears when it needs to be present) and it takes time to meet all the characters, be them big roles or small, villains or friends.
It's easily one of the most immersive wuxia and fantasy dramas I've ever watched, also thanks to the slow world building they are doing, presenting layer after layer instead of hitting us with it all at once.
A well crafted plot like I've rarely seen within the recently aired ones.

3. The OST is good, with some rather nice tracks, and never overused.

4. Solid cinematography and colouring, where everything looks good and real (some backdrops do feel a little too much CGI at times and the animals and fantastic creatures could use a little touch up, but it's a 5/10% of an overall great production)

The pacing of episode 23 feels a little weird, with rushed plot lines, time skips and things happening off-screen, and episode 24 feels just as abrupt, but if it wasn't clear enough before, now it's certain there's a bigger plot about to unfold – that was one effective twist!
I really can't wait to see what they have in store for us viewers.

Ending this review in the hope it won't crash and burn in the last half.

– Mei

Office Worker Isekaied into Dafeng Dynasty and Becomes TOP DAWG

This is such a common trope I've read often in manhuas/manhwas but I have to say I really don't watch it enough in dramas. I would say the only other one I watched where MC was isekaied is Romance of Tiger and Rose! Guardians of Dafeng also lives up to the comedy in ROTR but more in the form of slapstick comedy rather than humour in the dialogue. I'm watching this while I'm in a kdrama slump and I am being kept very entertained so far.

Since this is based off a novel series, I wonder if they're planning on having multiple seasons or if they're fitting everything in one season! Personally, I haven't read the novel but super excited to be watching this! Summary of the drama from what I've seen so far is basically in my headline - Xu Qi'an (originally Yang Ling before he woke up in a different world) aka Mr. Dylan Wang gets isekaied into an alternate fantasy world which takes place during Da Feng dynasty. A world with magic and powers and magical swords. He wakes up in prison btw and basically clears his and his family's names by using his brain, catching the eye of some pretty high up people. His character is supposed to be very smart, and with the addition of his modern world knowledge plus somehow remembering all his years of education (seriously, who the hell remembers their entire high school chemistry textbook), he becomes very good at solving cases and becomes famous for his poems (the ones he writes from what he remembers from books hes read). He slowly starts to move up in this world, eventually achieving his goal of being a part of the Guardians of Dafeng (which are essentially the protectors of the people, think police but with powers). His family is funny, and its so heartwarming to see them form a close bond (apparently the old him was emo) - his uncle, cousin, and aunt are especially funny when they're all together. The one flaw I would say so far is the fact that the writers aren't thinking too deep about how to show Xu Qi'an as a brilliant detective, he is simply just better than everyone and pieces things together better than most people in this dynasty do. I honestly don't have a problem with this, I also like that he solves things so quickly without any confusing path to get there, but it's amusing seeing how it's REALLY not that complicated. If someone is expecting really complex and good investigative skills from this, this is noooot for you. Anyways, now that he's a Guardian, he's also beginning to upgrade his fighting skills and we see already that he's also gifted in fighting. Although he seems to have selfish intentions with his interactions, you can tell he truly does care about people and upholds this righteousness by defending those who need it. On the way to becoming top dawg for real - you just know he's walking out of this with a girl. The FL who is the second princess doesn't appear in the drama until 6 episodes in and I'm not sure how big of a focus their romance will have but I'm sensing some great character development from her. Princess Lin'an (Tian Xiwei) is introduced as a spoiled princess who's always competing to appear better than the Grand Princess, bothering the Bureau of Astronomy for education and now Xu Qi'an for his poetry. Also excited to see their love story play out and I expect a lot of bickering from these two. In terms of acting, I feel like it's the typical chinese drama acting - the side characters act decently well, nothing mind blowing but again this is a comedic drama. I haven't watched Dylan Wang in anything for a HOT minute and honestly I can see that there's been improvement in his acting. He has a lot more facial expressions since his Meteor Garden Days and his line delivery is much better. Could he do better? For sure, but for now I don't care and just like his face. His hair also looks good in this. This is my first time watching Tian Xiwei in anything and I like her so far - pretty natural acting, cute face, good expressions! I've also seen some people complaining about Dylan's sichuan accent and oh gosh some of these people are so nitpicky. I'm really glad he gets to dub his own drama this time and I quite like his voice, I don't think too much of his accent but I guess it bothers some people since this takes place in a Dynasty.

If you're looking for a lighthearted, comedic drama, with a character who gets super OP along with some romance, definitely give this a try!

Money, fame, I want it all

I have seem mixed review for this, for me it gets a good score and I would recommend.

Guardians of Dafeng is a comedy drama, and that is something that I didn't know going in. I was pleasantly surprised though. As to say the least I have seen a lot of wuxia dramas that take a more serious and tragic turn. Dylan Wang's last drama I have seen, Unchained Love, had a problem with the tone. As that drama was comedy, but incredibly dark at the beginning. Here right away it is full comedy, and quite loud about it.

The cast knows how to work with each other, and because of that the comedy works most of the time. A little parts are tone deaf, but overall it is funny enough that I watch because I don't want to miss any jokes. The story may suffer, but I don't think this drama is super deep into any politics so in the end I am taking it for what it is. Dylan Wang is the main character, playing Xu Qi An. I love how he gets to be charistmat and over the top with the comedy.. he is incredibly handsome while he does it also.

I must say, the scene stealers for me are his Uncle. That man is hilarious, and the writing I have got to commend for making it so. The chemistry between the leads, and for everyone is a mixed bag of comedy and joy. What I haven't had a chance to see yet is a blossoming romance between the princess and Xu Qi An. Since it is so comical I can't take it very seriously after all. I don't get the criticism of the princess that Tian Xi Wei plays being really stupid, she isn't as bad as people are commenting. She is a schemer, and is charismatic as well. I wonder if the toning will suffer because it is just so funny. I can't see any deep storyline happening and hope it just stays the slice of life.

It is like watching the day in the life of an office worker, but the office worker is Dylan Wang and it is a wuxia. There are loads of work put onto him, he has to please his superiors, and it is all fun to watch thus far. The choreography and the money put into this is clearly doing this drama a service, I know it is trying to be the next big thing. I think it's a pretty great drama, with an easy to watch story and fun characters.

I wouldn't watch this for a serious story or romantic wuxia though, as the FL is barely a main lead. Dylan Wang is the star of this drama and you can tell he is aware of that, having fun and unafraid to be funny. I like the details of his character that he brings to life; like how he finds silver and is known to be lucky, or how he isn't overpowered and intelligent at all. It is funny because in the modern world he was charismatic, but not special. In this world he is special by bringing his modern knowledge to the world he is in to simply live a successful life. What is the definition of success though? Money, to live without worry, that is what he's going for.

farcical comedic brilliance

I've seen some reviewers attempt to rate this as a serious dramatic program. They totally miss the point and take themselves way too seriously as reviewers.

This is a farcical lighthearted comedic fantasy and adventure story. The plot does not need to be realistic or make sense because in fantasy we suspend our disbelief to live the story. The point is poking fun at the improbable situations and tropic stereotypes in the genre. That, and having a good laugh.

The mistake made, imho, was projecting this as a detective story in pre-release and not a comedy adventure. It isn't until we get into the story that the real nonsense begins, and the viewers realize that we have been haphazardly thrown into another world just like the hero.

This program is by no means perfect. Holes can be poked left and right if one wants to rate the expressions, accents or plot. However this would be like pointing out the absurdity of a Monty Python classic.

Guardians of the Dafeng is going to be an all time favorite that I will re-watch over and over.

After a long time, a CDrama excited me

I haven't been curious about a series since Are You the One aired. The male-centric drama is not my taste, that's why I I started watching hesitantly But this drama has succeeded in attracting my attention.
The story progresses slowly and carefully. So far, I don't think there has been a boring episode. The comedy of the series is enough. The VFX and ost of the drama has high quality.

Dylan Wang has tried his best and this is the secret of the success of the drama. To the extent that I think the drama does not need romance and it seems a bit unnecessary. In my opinion, either it shouldn't have a romance or it could have been written better.
But I enjoyed watching Tian Xi Wei, so this issue can be ignored. I hope the second half of the drama does not drop.
