Currently Watching: Medical Top Team
“Whenever a doctor cannot do good, he must be kept from doing harm.” Hippocrates
Medical Top Team focuses on depicting what goes into treating patients when the team that works on those patients is a team of doctors who are considered the best in their field. This is not really said in any intro, but you need to get ready for a more gruesome depiction of human greed and dirty hospital conspiracy. I can see you frowning and wondering why the hell should you watch this, well let me introduce to you the characters first. Maybe that would somewhat warm you up to it.
Main Cast:
Kwon Sang Woo as Park Tae Shin
A straightforward genius thoracic surgeon, who is depicted as being truly kind and soft-hearted according to the writers. What I like about his character is that he provides a perfect contrast to Han Seung Jae by being more emotionally driven and somewhat unstable making him somewhat of an anti-hero.
Jung Ryeo Won as Seo Joo Young
An ambitious, charismatic, and arrogant thoracic surgeon who may not be as misunderstood as what she appears to be. What I like about this character is that she just has the right combination of those little things that would make you love and hate a character.
Ju Ji Hoon as Han Seung Jae
A mild-mannered, renowned internist whose appearance supposedly hides a cold interior. At the risk of being hated, I have to say that I actually love his character better than the Tae Shin one. For me he’s a better representation of what a doctor with his kind of responsibility should be, level headed, careful and with the right touch of human empathy. He is also the bastard son of the chairman of Gwang Hae Hospital, something that adds to his personality and plays into the plot of him working hard to attain recognition from his father without sacrificing his ideals.
Oh Yeon Seo as Choi Ah Jin
An energetic and highly enthusiastic second year resident surgeon, who seemed to be depicted as the girl that gets into unrequited love without seeing much of Kim Seong Woo, who wears his love for her right on his sleeves.
Choi Minho as Kim Seong Woo
A good-natured first resident surgeon and also the youngest member of the top medical team. He has a heavy one-sided crush on Choi Ah Jin.
Well we can't really forget the secondary cast since they are the reason the main cast shines brightly, so without further ado here they come.
Secondary Cast:
Kim Young-ae as Shin Hye-soo
She’s depicted as being the ambitious, dubious, and manipulative deputy director of the Gwang Hae University Hospital. She has a will of steel in an unhappy marriage, who truly gives form to human greed. She’s the Chairman daughter-in-law making her Dr. Han's aunt.
Ahn Nae-sang as Jang Yong-seop
He's ambitious, a back stabber, Chief of Surgery who specializes in boot licking. He will do just anything and sacrifice just anyone to feed his own ambitions.
Park Won Sang as Jo Joon Hyuk
A sloppy misunderstood and kind anesthesiologist idolized by Ah-jin who is definitely more than meets the eye.
Lee Hee Jin as Yoo Hye Ran
A misunderstood, hot tempered, sociable surgical nurse in the Top team who is supportive of Park Tae Shin and totally distrustful of Jo Joon Hyuk
Alex Chu as Bae Sang Gyu
A carefree, kind-hearted, medical imaging specialist who hides his great ambition behind an image of a sacrificial lamb with deep interest in the shininess of his skin and is rather blunt about it.
Kim Gi Bang as Jung Hoon Min
A misunderstood, awkward, nerdy yet kind neurosurgeon who is locked in a mock rivalry contest with Bae Sang Gyu, and in a relationship with Yeo Min Ji.
Jo Woo Ri as Yeo Min Ji
A bubbly, childish surgical nurse, who happens to be the love interest of both Bae Sang Gyu and Jung Hoon Min. She also happens to be Choi Ah Jin's best friend and roommates.
Kim Sung Kyum as Lee Doo Kyung
He’s the arrogant and cold-hearted Chairman of Gwang Hae Group, Han Seung Jae's father and father-in law to Shin Hye Soo, and whose downfall may as well be pretty women and money. He’s a man who is more interested in profit than in human interactions.
Lee Dae Yeon as Hwang Cheol Goo
The kind but naïve director of the Paran Clinic for whom Dr. Park sells himself.
Okay now that we definitely know who is who, and if just seeing this interesting cast was not reason enough to make you pick this drama, well I would have to tell you that to seriously appreciate this drama you need a strong stomach and a certain love for medicine. But what captivates me the most about this drama is the grey area where the characters are not just black or white. No, they are rich complex characters who don’t always fit neatly in the category that they are put in. And I also like the sense of doom that rises from this drama where you kind of see a definite path that the almost non-existent romance may go, but you sit there cheering for the couple you know are never going to get together ( Dr. Park and Dr. Han *cough* anyone.)
I would say don’t get discouraged from the pace this dramas goes by. If you decide to pick up Medical Top Team, well, get ready to be bored and angry and of course teary. But the mistake to be made is to go into this drama expecting to see a medical drama Good Doctor style. Well, no, Medical Top Team is no fairy tale. It’s a complex story of human greed, desires, ideals, and the old age quest of man wanting to emulate God and conquer death. You have been warned‼
