Hooray to MBC! Apparently they finally gave up on the idea of making Jewel in the Palace 2. The last blow came from Lee Young Ae when she rejected taking part in the sequel of Dae Jung Geum. MBC has been pestering the actress ever since 2004 to reprise her role in the second season, but about a week ago Lee Young Ae crashed MBC dreams to make the glory days come back. Since the channel doesn’t have the same writer, main actress or PD they decided to throw this behind their backs and fill the empty timeslot with a new drama instead.
The fill-in drama is another sageuk, but this time around, it’s a fusion sageuk. Seemingly taking a leap between Sungkyunkwan Scandal and Arang and the Magistrate, Night Watchman's Journal will feature four bodyguards who will protect the inhabited villages from ghosts during the curfew hours from 9 PM to 5 AM. So it’s practically ghost haunting with mysteries surrounding the ghosts and some of the living.
Our four watchmen will be three men and a lady. The leading man is none other than MBC’s regular Jung Il Woo, who has been confirmed as the male lead. While the lady is going to be Go Sung Hee, who took part in Miss Korea, and now she’s a prime-time drama’s female lead. What a powerful girl (or agency). Anyway, it hasn’t been confirmed if Go Sung Hee will cross-dress as a boy or if she will just be the lady between three men. The other two male leads are yet to be announced. Let’s all hope that they will be good names to make this drama worth waiting for.
The drama comes from the company that brought us Sungkyunkwan Scandal with the PD of Jumong and the screenwriter of The King and I.
Records of Night Watchman (aka Chronicle/Journal/Annals of the Night Watchman) will premiere later in July taking Triangle’s timeslot on MBC. What do you think? Is it on your dramalist?
