Ex-Girlfriend Club

A chic cat, an ill-tempered and fierce lioness and a sultry fox. These are the ones who make Bang Myeong Soo's and Kim Soo Jin’s lives complicated in tvN’s Friday-Saturday romantic comedy, Ex-Girlfriend Club.

This drama is currently my addiction - it’s refreshing, the humor and romance are well-balanced and there are five main characters! FIVE! You might think that having that many people to focus on is too much but it’s actually what makes everything fun.

But wait! How can animals make their lives difficult, you ask?

Well, it all started when Jung In Films suddenly got into debt because the company's president had used the company's money for personal reasons. Unfortunately, Kim Soo Jin works for this company and to save herself (and her co-worker Eun Hye) from being jobless, she unwillingly decides to make a film based on a webtoon entitled I’m Introducing My Girlfriends.

A chic cat, an ill-tempered and fierce lioness and a sultry fox. No, they aren’t real animals—they’re the characters of Myeong Soo’s webtoon a.k.a. his exes!

The problem? The creator of this webtoon is none other than Bang Myeong Soo, Soo Jin’s ex-boyfriend. An even bigger problem is the fact that the webtoon is about Myeong Soo’s real-life exes and there's a big possibility that she will be included in the story.

Soo Jin will run into many obstacles in exchange for saving Jung In Films and herself from being unemployed, including meeting the other ex-girlfriends themselves. Will she be able to complete the film while working with Myeong Soo and with his exes breathing down her neck? It’s up to you to find out and I recommend that you do because this hilariously thrilling drama is guaranteed to make you laugh with every episode!

Characters:

(I will only be putting up a short description of the characters so as not to spoil the story too much.)

Our (main) main character, Kim Soo Jin (Song Ji Hyo), is a film producer with a strong-willed personality. Even though she feels like a mouse trapped inside a cage of cats whenever she’s with Myeong Soo’s other ex-girlfriends, she still tries her best not to look pathetic in front of them and tackles the problems that can potentially stop the production of the film head-on.

Bang Myeong Soo (Byun Yo Han) is the ladies’ man (ex-ladies’ man?) of the drama and the one who’s partly responsible for his ex-girlfriends’ sudden reappearance. Just like Soo Jin, he has to deal with their polar opposite personalities and keep them from stopping the film production. With the return of his exes in his life, will his feelings for one of them also come back?

The Ex-Girlfriends

The Cat: Na Ji Ah (Jang Ji Eun), the oldest among the exes, is an elegant woman who can intimidate anyone with just her presence alone. In situations where people around her are being frantic, she almost always manages to keep her composure. Ever since Myeong Soo found out about her recent divorce and that she runs a small restaurant, she has been receiving help from him by letting him co-run the place (and mostly wash the dishes).

The Lioness: Look at that face. Look at it. Just from the picture, I can already hear that screeching music from Psycho. Jang Hwa Yeong (Lee Yoon Ji) is the type of woman whom you don’t want to mess with unless you want your hair ripped out of your head. Since she and Myeong Soo had a relationship that’s very far from normal, she’s against the creation of the film because her dirty laundry will be revealed not only to the public, but to her fiancé as well.

The Fox: The youngest among all of them, La La/RaRa/Lara (Ryu Hwa Young), is an actress whom anyone barely knows. Despite having broken up with Myeong Soo, she still gets jealous whenever he becomes too touchy with other women, especially when it’s with Ji Ah. She has a very pushy personality and can be nosy at times but this doesn't stop her from being a funny and lovable character.

Side note: For someone who used to spend a lot of time in the KPOP realm, I'm surprised that I didn’t recognize Hwa Young—who is a former idol if you had no idea—immediately, I thought that she was just another actress whom I didn’t know. If you’re hesitant to watch the drama because you’re not really fond of idols, don’t be! I can assure you that Hwa Young’s acting is convincing in this one.

How Myeong Soo was able to date these women, we will never know.

Why should you watch it?

Now, Ex-Girlfriend Club may seem just like any other rom-com out there but believe me—it isn’t, and here are the reasons why:

The women in this drama are freaking awesome. All of them are assertive and can think for themselves even though some of them may be a bit more childish than the others. You may not love them in the beginning but as you get to the latest episodes, you'll feel more and more attached to them.

Afraid of having another case of Second Lead Syndrome? Worry not, because even I am not sure who the second lead is in here.

Even the supporting characters are lovable and entertaining! Just like the ex-girlfriends, they all have different personalities that add more fun to the drama, especially Jo Geon and Soo Jin's sister & brother-in-law.

It just has the right amount of fiction/reality and comedy/drama. If you're looking for something lighthearted and comical but can still have those serious moments (but not to the point where it spoils the fun of the drama), this is it.

The OST is addicting. The moment the intro played in the first episode, I told myself to download the song immediately as soon as it's released. If the intro isn't enough to stick on your mind, wait 'til you hear the drama's rendition of "The Rose of Sharon has Bloomed."

It’s a tvN drama! Why shouldn’t you give it a chance?

Thank you for reading this and I really hope that you'll take your time to watch the Ex-Girlfriend Club if you haven't already. You will not be disappointed!
