I have a penchant for female leads with unusual fashion. Most people would look at and go “No. Just no.” Whether it’s the character who’s awkward and bumbling, and at a total loss on how to properly dress themselves or the manic, pixie, dream girl whose wardrobe is wild and all over the place, or the girl who can’t be chuffed about making an effort and prefers to throw on whatever’s handy and comfy, I have a special place in my heart for characters with quirky, unique, or even non-existent, senses of style.
Of course, I think I’m in the minority on this one, as most viewers seem to prefer their female leads with a sense of ‘style’ or for them to at least not look ‘bad’. (After all, we all love a well-dressed female lead, myself included.) But there’s something about a character whose form of dress isn’t polished or conventional or even recognizable that draws me to them.
So without further ado, allow me to introduce to you what I consider some of the Best Worst-Dressed Female KDrama Leads of All Time.
(List is in no particular order. Based solely on dramas I’ve actually watched. The list will most likely grow over time.)
Bel Ami, Bo Tong
This drama was terrible. Really terrible. The only highlight was Bo Tong and her outrageous sense of style. I would wear almost everything she wore in this drama. And then I’d wear it again in different colours.
High School King of Savvy, Soo Young
Everything she wore was so dumpy and misshapen and awkward, yet utterly charming and true to her character, and I never wanted her to change. The makeover she received by the end, as slight as it was, honestly made me sad.
Queen of Mystery, Seol Ok
The poor thing had no sense of clothing coordination whatsoever and always looked more like a housewife trying too hard than she did anything else, but damn if she wasn’t adorable doing it. Besides, genius detective skills cancel out any terrible fashion choices you might make.
Goong, Chae Kyung
This is my definition of the worst drama of all time. I hate it with the passion of a thousand suns. I don’t remember being particularly impacted by the fashion when I watched it but looking back now at how early 2000’s it is, I can’t help but feel nostalgic. She frequently wore things that made no sense, but the nostalgia won’t let me hate it.
Sweden Laundry, Kim Bom
Her wardrobe consisted solely of athletic wear. Tracksuits, hoodies, sweaters, etc. And while none of it was particularly ugly, it was certainly not going to win her any praise from the more fashion inclined among drama viewers. Those bangs tho.
So there you have it, some of the Best Worst-Dressed Female Kdrama Leads of All Time. At least according to me, lol. But what about you? Are there any characters you would add to this list? Let me know in the comments below!
