And was he the bad guy from the start ? 

Maio Ansu in novel is a daughter of a merchant family (same as drama). She was introduced way later into the story unlike the drama. Events within the Song family (Song Mo vs Duke) eventually led to imperial decreed marriage between Song Han and Miao Ansu.

Ok, they totally changed the novel storyline, I don't know if it's going to bea  happy ending, I'm so worried now....

Novel itself is a very long one, so they had cut off a lot of side plots and less significant characters. Based on previous works of director I believe we will get the happy ending from the novel. At least for our main couple...
We can already say that Zhang Ruo has been paired with Cheng Jia - and I expect marriage and good ending for them too...
in the novel Miao Ansu was able to survive that awful marriage thanks to help of DZ and SM... despite marriage being dictated by royal edict she got a divorce paper :)
So far we don't know if Song Han is an evil character ... or just not capable one. I guess we will see more of his true face in next few episodes.

21 episodes in and he seems so evil. Something about him at his mum's funeral and every scene since. 

I wonder whether Jiang Yan will appear as a character or not. Since Chen Jia is likely being paired with Zhao Zhangru in the drama, Chen Jia x Jiang Yan ship likely won't happen.

So, based on ep 25 teaser, Jiang Yan in drama is likely already dead now, and SM went bat shit crazy upon learning that and tried to kill his father.

Since Li Yaoniang  was mentioned in the ep 25 teaser, Song Han story most likely won't be changed as well.

Of course, everything just my guesses.

song han in the novel is more of a weak accomplice.  he knew what happened the whole time but choose not to expose or share the truth with the brother.  he just wants to remain as the second master of the song family and enjoy a luxury easy life.   he's basically a two face creep to the dad/brother:  being a filial son to the dad but also put all the blame to the dad for what happen, being a good little brother but wish for the dad to get rid of/kill song mo.

even after the truth was exposed, he tried very hard to maintain the second master title and stick to whoever could guarantee his position.  song mo made sure the 1/2 brother and dad did not get a peaceful day after he found out what happen.  b/c of that, song han sought to join the prince liao's fraction in exchange for a title/position by assisting w/ the capture of DZ and her son to use against song mo.

Does the novel have a reason why Song Mo's father hates him so much? Even before he joins his uncles army he was being beaten and thrown out of the house regularly. He is the eldest son and heir. All the siblings share the same mother, so I'm genuinely confused as to why his father is so hell bent from the jump to get ride of him. I would understand more if their wasn't abuse prior to him joining the army. 

I can't tell if Han was equally abused as a child, but I know that their father dotes on him. And reading some novel spoilers is a bit of a mini me to the duke. So was it that the father was able to better mold the younger brother, and Song Mo was more willing to fight back and run to his maternal family?  Does it really just come down to Song Mo's father not being able to break and remold him? 

Yes, there is reason for it., and it is tied to major plot spoiler. 

TLDR:

• SM's father is incompetent and got massive inferiority complex toward the very capable Madam Jiang (SM's mother)
• He is hell bent of irritating and destroying Madam Jiang, and by extension Song Mo and the rest of the Jiang family
• Song Han is a by-product of SM father's complex, and was doted on for the sole purpose of annoying Song Mo
• There are many despicable stuffs the father did in the past for the above reason, and it led to falling out with Song Mo hard

On the novel:

Miao family is now commoners, but before Miao family had a woman who became a concubine. Thanks to her, their family status was raised. After she passed away, they became commoners and the men couldn't support the family.

Anyway, Song Han originally begged to marry his cousin from Jiang family so he could legitimately be part of Jiang, but Song Yichun refused and wanted him to marry a princess. Song Mo and Dou Zhao plotted to get Song Han marry a girl that has no power. So Song Mo gained the support of empress dowager and grand princess. They issued Imperial edict to marry Song Han with Miao Ansu.

Both Song Yichun and Song Han were upset, but Miao family thought they could be rich through Ansu. This might be a good marriage? 

Nope! Ansu quickly realized Song Han and Song Mo are in dispute. She also realized Song Han is a jerk, sadistic, and has no money at all. She then decided to stay away from Song family affairs and sides with Dou Zhao.

When Song Han plotted against Song Mo , Ansu helped Song Mo. She successfully divorced him with Dou Zhao's help.

In the drama seems like Ansu fell for beauty trap. Let's just hope she stays sober and not go against Dou Zhao.
