Yesterday I had my Sunday re-watch session with my mom. We watched episodes 7 and 8.
Who knows, perhaps my personal experience can help you choose with care when you finally get someone watch a drama with you. I had only thought about how great it would be to share the pleasure with someone I deeply care about, but I did not think of how heartbreaking it is to share the pain, or see my mother watch Jae Kang go with teary eyes.
She's blown away by it, though, and at this point I have to deal with the fact that we will keep on watching and that my heart will undergo a second strain, somehow amplified by being mirrored in my mother's reaction. She's just as caught in it as I was/am. Since I strongly respect her opinion, I take it as a further confirmation that this drama truly is great.

After all we deal with death in the real world & it would be unrealistic & naive to expect sugary happily ever afters in every drama. I for one liked the poignancy of ESK's death & it made me like the drama & admire his character even more.

I'm well aware everybody's moved on and you're all immersed in other dramas, but I needed to share this little new chapter of my personal drama: "Watching with Mom".
Tonight it was episodes 11 & 12.

Among other things, my mom - who watched both episodes seated on the edge of the couch as if she was ready to jump at Bung Gu's throat - commented: "Really, Rita, if this thing doesn't end happily, I don't know what I'll do!"
And who do you think is her favourite character???
With the exception of her crush for Lee Jae Ha which has everything to do with the hormones and nothing with preferences, she is motherly and deeply enamoured of Eung Shi Kyeong. She has that besotted smile on her face every time he's on screen, and what in heaven's name should I have replied to her comment?
The only thing I came up with was a very lame "with Korean dramas you never know"... Gah.

Frankly... I should have proposed watching Hana Kimi with her...

Even though nobody really cares, I would like to end my long DWM (Drama With Mom) story.
She watched the final episode tonight and was so enthusiastic, not only we talked about it until it was so late she had to rush back home, but she made me promise I find another K-drama for her to watch as soon as possible (another very good one!, no less). She had the decency to add that it's all a pretext to see me once a week, but since it was uttered in between her ahhhhhhhh and ohhhhhhhhhh, I have a hard time believing her fully.

Whatever, I got what I wanted, after all: infect her with my addiction. She loved everything about it: the plot, the acting, the shooting, the scenery, the humour, the emotion. She fell in love with Jae Ha on episode 1 and stayed true to her crush, despite her loving all the characters bar the evil ones (and crying for Shi Kyeung). She had her own very personal satisfaction in telling me: "see? I knew it from the start Jae Ha was the man!"
LOL, I can't blame her. :D

But what you still don't know is that, meanwhile, my man watched it too!!! He once happened to come home a little sooner than usual and saw 10 minutes of an episode with us. The next day, he came to me almost walking on tiptoe
- do you think I'll be able to read the subtitles?
- of course. But I don't want to force you, I know you hate subs
- well, if your mother reads them with her glasses, why shouldn't I?
- very true, my dear. For you it's going to be a piece of cake
- I may try
- tonight?
- ........... fine *insert VERY FAKE condescending tone, as if he was doing me a favour.

To cut the long story short, he watched it in less than a week. And loved it so much he's now advertising Korean dramas among MY friends.

Life is so funny. ;)

I love your story! Gosh I wish I could get someone to watch with me! D won't, My Mom wouldn't and I am slowly slowly slowly warming my best friend into 'thinking' about watching a drama with me.

If I ever get her to do it I am going to start with Coffee Prince.

Is your Mom going to watch more with you now?! What do you think you are going to pick? I envy you your sharing this with your Husband and Mom!

It's really a difficult choice now. My mom is essentially a realist, and even if she's a romantic, I can't possibly appease her with a simple rom-com. She needs some substance and hates cheesy lines the most (so every other korean rom com is out of the question).
At the same time, though, she also loves sarcasm, so I am taking Secret Garden into consideration. Coffee Prince is obviously very high on my list too (I still consider it one of the best K-dramas I've ever watched), but I fear she may find it a little too "young" - not in the execution, but in the issues. Kim Sam Soon would be a good choice for her, I think, but I'm not in the mood to re-watch a drama I didn't enjoy as much as I would like.
I'll let you know. ;)

As for my man, I'm going to show him something Japanese. Hungry! is the best choice, since he's a pastry chef, and French on top of it.
If addiction has to be, then I don't want any geographic boundaries. ;)

On a final note: I found out that, if I truly want someone to do something, I have to behave like a steamroller. After years of timid attempts, I simply told my mother: "so, from next Sunday you WILL come to my house and watch a drama with me. We will have fun."
It worked.
Perhaps you should try the fierce approach too. ;)

So guess what folks... I am finally watching and D is watching this with me! ...let me repeat. D is watching this with me. We watched two episodes yesterday and three today. We are on Episode 5 and D is loving it. "it's pretty okay" "come on baby...you've been laughing out loud!" "well, I said it was Pretty Okay" Oh how I love that descriptive man. so many great moments so far but in 5... When he is on the arranged/blind date with the girl and keeps talking about Hang A the whole time. In French! Too funny.

I will. He is liking it. He actually said to me, "this isn't a drama that stars one of the Asians you drool over?" I said "Nope" and he patted me on the head and sat back on the couch, relaxed as if to say... Well, I'm not sure what that says but he seemed okay with it all.

so then we were watching and it involved some pausing here and there to explain some cultural things ...Like what "Hyung" means different things like that. D likes foreign movies so he is not intimidated by subs. (Thank the Goose! Because my MOM is intimidated by subs and watching with her is a nightmare.) Over all he is enjoying this a lot. After dinner tonight we are watching another episode so if anything interesting occurs during the watching I will let you guys know.

Other than laughing out loud every once in a while or asking me cultural questions/translations D is pretty quiet while we watch. I am so happy I have someone to watch with he gets extra kisses. (Personally I think this is his main motivation.)

My mom was intimidated by subs too... until she actually tried. She ended up following them without much trouble - although she confessed to me that now and then she simply ignores them and watches the expression of the actors and from them understands what's going on.
Furthermore, since she is a linguist at heart, she is learning expressions in Korean pretty fast.

My man loved K2H too and because we haven't watched anything together since that time, now and then he enquires: "you haven't got anything new to show me, have you?" LOL
Men are such simple creatures... ;)

Jeanie, your man relaxing can only mean one thing: he doesn't feel the need to control you and the amount of your drool while watching. I suppose this is a great source of relief. ;)
