The show didn't really change Jing's story but Dengwei does a great job as the nice, needy and lowkey sly fox spirit? His visuals and build help a lot, he has that cleancut boring good guy face but what helps Dengwei stand out a lot as an actor despite being just 183cm is his very broad shoulders, narrow V waist, short torso, and super long legs, his legs are so long that he looks shorter than Yangzi when seated (!) so they gave him a cushion to prop him up in some scenes lol https://youtube.com/shorts/ozLm0Samy_E he looks very imposing in costume dramas because he has a very nice body line (he knows it, see his predebut shots) versus other actors of the same height. As for the plot:

- there is a part removed where Jing uses the puppet dolls to create a fake YaoJing pair to trick Xuan when YaoJing are escaping from Qingshui Town
- the show did make Jing more heroic by saving Xiaoyao from drowning
- they weakened Xiangliu's loveline 😭😭😭 he is supposed to feed her blood from his tongue 🤬 also because his blood is poisonous due to all her lovely concoctions in the book he sucked all the poison out whenever he fed her blood (that part can be cut lol it's unnecessarily troublesome). He also hugs her to sleep every night for 37 years to keep her warm and talks to her, and Xiaoyao can hear him because she's awake but unconcious. She hears all his stories for 37 years i hope they don't cut that 🙏🙏

Regarding the tongue bit, I'm not sure they actually made a change in the drama. Details from the novel are under the spoiler tag below.

AH  VIP 2 days ago

@AH The first time XY dies, XL spends 37 years reviving her with monthly transfusions of his essential blood. That part is all described from XY's POV in chapter 22 (and in chapter 26 XY mentions that this process also involved XL giving one of his lives to save her).

At the beginning of the healing process XY had no ability to feel, hear or see anything. When she starts to be able to feel things, she feels XL embrace her (while healing her), caress her cheek and touch her forehead in greeting, but never describes feeling him kiss her. She describes XL's blood flowing into her as warmth, but never specifies where / how his blood flows into her.

The only time the novel mentions blood from XL's tongue (or delivering that blood to XY via a kiss) is in chapter 48 when XY poisons herself to death and XL saves her a second time. That time XL bit his tongue and fed XY his essential blood only once (instead of monthly for 37 years) via a kiss. XY was "completely fine" after "some time" and the whole process was witnessed by LY and Sir Bi.

So the two revivals are clearly different. The tongue blood / kiss may still feature when XL brings XY back from death the second time.

So i have a question. How did XL not feel the pain when she was attacked with the beasts and the other bit only feel the pain from the last attack that killed her. I need explanation pls

AH  VIP a day ago

Just because it wasn't shown on screen doesn't mean that XL didn't feel XY's pain or emotions when the beasts attacked and when her foot was stabbed, or that he didn't have any reaction to XY's pain / emotions in those moments. Maybe the director felt showing his reaction to those moments every time would break the flow of the scene. XL has probably gotten pretty good at hiding his outward reactions to XY's pain too, so it might be difficult to convey his reactions to those attacks on screen. Showing his reaction to the last attack was the most important, because that attack was deadly and prompted XL to drop everything and run to her.

Kokuto  a day ago

That's a good point. I mean, XL felt XY getting her hands beaten by A Nian, and we were shown he thought about going to XY, and then didn't, in part because it wasn't lethal, and in part because he knew TuShan Jing was there ... even if he thought TSJ was falling down on the job at that moment. It's like that, plus more, given how many people XY has around her now.

AH  VIP a day ago

@Kokuto

Agreed. In addition to the hand-beating not being lethal and TSJ being with XY, there were at least two other reasons that might have factored into XL not going to her even though they showed XL feeling XY's pain on screen.

(1) XY rejected XL's offer to try to rescue her when her leg was broken (a more serious injury) in the previous episode.

(2) Reaching the shore of Five Gods Mountain from the ocean and rescuing XY from ZX's men there would have been difficult. XY thought it would be a death sentence. Rescuing XY from inside the Grand Emperor of Haoling's court would be even more impossible. Trying to do so might cause XY more harm than good.

It's also worth noting that showing XL's reaction to the broken leg and hand-beating on screen was created for the drama. Those scenes aren't included in the novel - he just shows up to offer to rescue XY after her leg is broken and doesn't show up when her hands are beaten. He also didn't call TSJ useless.

Kokuto  a day ago

@AH Yes, those probably played into XL's decision not to go during the A Nian incident.

Didn't know that. It's a nice add. It reminds us even if they don't show every instance, he is sharing her pain and emotion.

She does not regain her spiritual power, but (in addition to her poison skills) she becomes a very proficient archer and gains the ability to breathe under water without any assistance and to swim under water almost as well as XL. CX will get the throne. Jing will get the girl. But in the end XL will be left with nothing. He’s probably gonna know this and yet he is give his all for her. That just makes it so sad. Poor XL. I already feel so sad for him.

@MoonPrsmPwr That's confusing. I hope in the drama they will at least show us that she remembers and misses him.

first_snow55  a day ago

@Sea00 That's what I read before. But I am not certain. Maybe novel readers can clarify.

AH  VIP a day ago

XL will end up with the ending he carefully and diligently orchestrated. An honourable death on the battlefield. Never failing in his loyalty to Gong Gong or betraying his cause. Giving XY a way to defend herself (her archery), a person to rely on (TSJ - and I do mean "give" here, not just "allow"), and a refuge to escape to (the ocean). And knowing that XY cared about him, but not so much that she couldn't have a happy ending with TSJ after his death.

Those of us who love his character would prefer that he got an ending with lasting happiness, but at least we can take comfort in the fact that he got almost everything he wanted. I think ZX's ending is much worse, but he brings it upon himself.

AH  VIP a day ago

@Sea00 She will remember him and will be distraught after his death. She will go to check her mirror and find that XL erased the memories of him that she recorded in it, so she can no longer use the mirror to watch those memories again.

AH  VIP 5 hours ago

@Sea00 Oh, wow. You're welcome. I've mostly come to peace with XL's ending at this point, after thinking about it for a bit and re-reading and re-watching a bit. I really empathize with the author who tried to think of a better ending for XL but couldn't. He just wouldn't be XL if he made different choices.

Sea00  2 hours ago

@AH True his choice really screams his character.

cometawatcher  a day ago

@AH So he knew she had feeling for him?

AH  VIP a day ago

@cometawatcher He can't read her mind, so he wouldn't know *exactly* her thoughts and feelings for him at any given moment. But the poisonous bug connection means that he can feel all her pain (including heartache), her emotions, and her heartbeat (including every time it speeds up around him). And he discovers the memories of him that she recorded in her mirror.

There are many occasions where XY says or does things that make it pretty clear how she feels without directly confessing. On at least one occasion she starts to try to put how she feels into words more directly. But XL always cuts her off, redirects her, or pushes her away at these points. He intentionally stops her from developing deeper feelings for him. Erasing her memories of him in the mirror is one example of many.

Aimikomi

@AH Could you tell me your favorite parts?

AH  VIP 20 hours ago

@Aimikomi It would be very difficult to put all of them here succinctly, but I'll mention a few of my favourite parts that occur after XY's assassination.

Chapter 22 - During XY's healing period, XL takes her to the surface to observe the moon, takes her to hear the songs of the merpeople, and tells her a bit about his past. XL isn't sure if she is awake or not at this point, and when it comes up later (in chapter 26) it is clear that XL doesn't want XY to be aware of the things he told her while she was healing, so XY pretends she wasn't awake.

Chapter 23 - XY wishes she was born a few hundred years earlier so she could save XL from the slave death matches and make him just be like her companion FBB, and not XL (i.e., a man who can be her companion, not the man who cannot abandon Gong Gong and his cause, an army strategist who is her family's enemy and a warrior bent on a warrior's death).

Chapter 26 - When XY sees TSJ for the first time in a year after his marriage to FFYY she is alone (it's ZX's wedding day) and XY's heart is in pain. XL takes her away and they spend a night and a day in the ocean together, and eat a meal together on an island. XY thinks to herself (not out loud) that, if it were possible, she would like to spend the rest of her life like this. XL describes the beauty that can be found on the islands scattered across the sea, and XY tells him she wants to see them.

Chapter 43 - XL saves XY from danger. XY sees XL's true demon form. XL drinks blood from XY's neck to heal. XY falls asleep on top of XL / in his arms. XY says she will agree to any price (unrelated to ZX) if he helps her find a demon. XL makes her promise to live. XY wonders if she had met XL years earlier, could he have found the woman he loved? Would he take her out to shop and eat?

Chapter 46 - When XY cannot bring herself to kill XL, XL smiles at her. It appears to be a mocking smile, but that was just hiding his true joy. XL pushes XY to cut ties with him, because he knows he is going to die soon (the defeat of his army is imminent). XL creates the jewel that will save TSJ's life and gives it to the merman who will revive him.

Chapter 48 - XL saves XY from death a second time, but this time secretly. He also kills the poisonous bugs (using a life and stabbing himself in the heart to do so - and he does not use XY's blood to heal himself afterwards) to sever the connection between them, so that when he dies XY will live and not feel him die. He covers his tracks so XY won't know what he's done for her.

Chapter 50 - XY has mixed feelings when she finds out her poisonous bug connection with XL has been broken. XY asks ZX to spare XL's life (even though she has cut ties with him and she knows her life is no longer connected to his).

Chapter 51 - XY is devastated by XL's death. In the end, she disappears with TSJ (the man XL resurrected for XY to rely on) to the ocean (the place where XY belongs, thanks to XL's essential blood). Perhaps to explore the beauties of its scattered islands that XL described to her.

Aimikomi  19 hours ago

@AH I cannot wait for Season 2. Even though in the end Xiang Liu is gone, but part of him will still be with her as she found her home in the ocean which was she first enjoyed with Xiang Liu and only him.

AH  VIP a day ago

I'm rewatching episode 25 and had a thought. FFB is clearly injured, so XY hands him a small bottle with something in it (very high quality healing medicine that she received from the emperor). XL doesn't know what's in the bottle, but he knows that whether it's medicine or poison, it won't have any affect on him. But she gave it to him, so he eats it immediately, and XY says "You do trust me."

Every time XY gives XL or FFB something to eat or drink (whether it's medicine, an antidote or poison), he always eats it completely and without question. Is there ever a risk of any of it actually irreversibly hurting him? Probably not. But it still reminds me of that moment in QS town where TSJ drank the poison XY gave him without hesitation, even though he almost certainly knew it was poison. He also knew XY would give him the antidote.

It just makes me think that XL and TSJ have the same mentality: "If XY gives me something to eat or drink, I will eat or drink it without hesitation. No questions asked."

I also love how pleased XL / FFB is when XY makes him a poison for him. He tries to act cool, but he loves it.

Ah okay, I don’t really remember the novel much.

Mighty queen  a day ago

Can you spoil me if Jing gonna die? Because CX plotted it with Jing's brother? And if Jing did died, he was resurrected by XL?

VesperLynd  a day ago

@Mighty queen He was presumed dead but his body was never found. In the novel translation I read, how he recovered was not explicitly stated. Although it could be inferred that XL was responsible. How he procured Jing's "medicine" was so heartbreaking.

AH  VIP 21 hours ago

@Mighty queen Adding to what VesperLynd said, TSJ was definitely resurrected by XL.

When XL pushes XY to cut ties with him, he has her drain a significant amount of blood for him - ostensibly for him to turn the blood into healing pills for himself. XY views this as paying her debts to XL so she owes him nothing more. But XL takes that blood and secretly turns it into a jewel that he gives to a merperson, along with instructions in the language of the merpeople.

Sir Bi is a person from Jade Mountain who observes XL revive XY the second time. XL makes him promise not to tell XY that XL was the person who saved her life this time. Sir Bi and XL agree to say that the Royal Mother of Jade Mountain was the person who saved XY and removed the poisonous bug. Sir Bi also sees XL hide the clam shell (XL's clam shell) that was used to keep XY alive before XL arrived. He sees that XL does everything to hide and erase what he's done for XY.

Sir Bi is also present when Jing explains how he returned. Jing only knows that he was revived by a pair of merpeople, seemingly by chance and out of the goodness of their hearts. Even though Sir Bi did not see XL give the jewel to the merperson I mentioned earlier, he knows that XL is a supreme power in the ocean, that the merpeople respect and obey him and that he speaks the merpeople's language. Sir Bi realizes that XL not only saved TSJ, he did so in a way that ensured TSJ and XY would never be able to discover that XL was the person who orchestrated it (because they do not speak the merpeople's language).

I should also mention that some fans speculate that XL might have even used one of his nine lives to revive TSJ (maybe by putting it in the jewel), since XY said that XL used one of his lives when he first revived her.

Ltran904  20 hours ago

@AH I think XL used one of his life for XY because she was very closed to death. However before Jing battled Hou Jing took the pill XY made for him to preseve his last breath, so he didnt need XL's soul blood. Though it would be awesome if he did.

Antinh85  21 hours ago

@AH I wonder how they will display that interpretation in the drama. XL's character is so tragic. I wish she knew what he did her for. He should have at least said good bye to her and said all of things he wanted to say.

AH  VIP 5 hours ago

@Antinh85 XL had many, many opportunities to reveal his feelings to XY but he never used them. He made a decision about the ending he wanted for himself and for XY and made it happen. The words he wanted to say to XY but couldn't were his good wishes for her, which he carved into the crystal that XY gave him, hid in the belly of a laughing doll, and gave (through Sir Bi) to XY as her wedding gift. He was satisfied with that and I don't think he regretted not revealing his feelings to XY.

Alysha Johnson  a day ago

Sometime I find life so ironic.
XY's mother chose her XL, paid for it with her life, and left behind a young XY ridden with enemies.
If her mother had chosen differently, XY would have grow up with love and safety like A'nian. Then she would have the courage to love someone like XL. That means that either her mother or her will choose their XL, but only one of them can. XY already paid the price for her mother's decision. No wonder she can't do it again.

Had XY not came back as the Haoling princess, I think she would have a chance with XL - but that doesn't matter either because he will choose to die anyway, the same way as XY's dad. If they have a child together, that child future will be like XY. XL and XY future is already determined before XY was even born.

Cc2  19 hours ago

I think the key here is the author. I read somewhere that she really wanted XL to be endgame but she just couldn’t figure out how to go about it.

XL’s dedication to the Chen Rong army was always the biggest issue. I know it’s lazy writing but I wouldn’t mind a moment of epiphany for him or something lol

AH  VIP 13 hours ago

At least twice in the novel, XY wonders if things could have been different if she met XL before he met Gong Gong and joined the Sheng Nong army (e.g., if she had been born earlier and saved him from the slave death match arena). I feel like if the writers wanted to give a boon to the YaoLiu shippers, they could show us an extended version of that fantasy where XY and XL meet earlier in his life, they fall in love, have lots of dates (exploring the ocean and its islands, eating, shopping, etc. - all things the novel says XY wants to do), get married, and have kids. If it was a fantasy, the details wouldn't have to be fully fleshed out or totally make sense. And they wouldn't have to change XL's character or ending.

Horrible things happen to her so that her reverse harem men can worry about her and try to help her. They would have fewer opportunities to dramatically show their love if her life was all sunshine and rainbows.

lucky  3 hours ago

it don’t have to be sunshine and rainbows but like why couldn’t the FL have spiritual power, seeing her get hurt all the time makes my blood boil for her

AH  VIP 2 hours ago

@lucky Why? For the reason I mentioned. In the epilogue of the novel, XL carves his wish for XY into a crystal: "The ability to protect yourself, someone to rely on, a place to go - wishing you a lifetime of worry-free happiness!" He writes this because when XL first meets XY, she tells him "I am just someone who has been discarded. I have no ability to protect myself, I have no one to rely on, I have no where to go..." So XL makes sure that none of that is still true before he dies.

Since she can't get her spiritual power back (unless she becomes the Royal Mother of Jade Mountain, which would requiring cutting herself off from the world and being a lone - not and ending that would make her happy) XL spends 10 years teaching XY archery so that she has a means of defending herself. In the novel, she uses that skill. We haven't gotten to that scene in the drama yet.

Also, thanks to XL's essential blood, XY can breathe under water without assistance and swim almost as well as XL. Two things that make her stronger / better able to defend herself than before. Both will be helpful when she ultimately decides to run away to the ocean with TSJ.

So her lack of spiritual power is a set up for XL to help her. It's one of the ways the author has him demonstrate his love for her.

You can also click on “Recent Discussion “ thread that are more detailed 🙂

ClaraIp  14 hours ago

@Susuwatari789 Wait! When did he give 2 lives?

AH  VIP 14 hours ago

XL uses at least one of his lives to revive XY after her assassination (she mentions it in chapter 26 of the novel). He might also use one of his lives to revive XY a second time after she poisons herself to death (the process seems different, so it's not totally clear, and the novel doesn't specify one way or the other). He also uses a jewel that he creates from XY's blood to bring TSJ back from the dead. He might have used a life as part of that process as well (the novel doesn't specify that he does).

XL definitely uses a life to kill the poisonous bugs and sever his connection with XY before the final battle where he knows he will die (the novel does specify this).

Apart from the two lives he definitely used for XY and the possible two additional lives he might have used for XY and TSJ, it's not 100% clear how XL loses his other lives. He may have lost a few in the slave death matches before he escaped. He may have lost a few in war. Or he might not have lost any before, and loses them all in the final battle. The novel doesn't specify.

In terms of how he dies, it's important to know that right before the final battle he revives XY (the second time) and kills the poisonous bugs. Both steps required significant power and left XL injured and drained. He doesn't use XY's blood to heal himself before going to the final battle.

After protracted fighting XL (disguised as Gong Gong) leads the last 1,000 soldiers of Sheng Nong's army to an island where they make their last stand against 100,000 Xuan Yuan soldiers. Even though XL was heavily injured at this point, not even the strongest Xuan Yuan warrior could defeat him. He was finally killed when 10,000 arrows were fired at him at once.

shrimp  13 hours ago

In episode 30, if XY had truly died, would XL have died as well, considering they are connected by the lover's bug?

insideout91 13 hours ago

No, he has 9 lifes, one of his life will disappeared but he will not be dead

AH  VIP 13 hours ago

The logic of the life-and-death bond created by the bugs is a bit odd. It seems clear that if one host is mortally injured and the other host is healthy, the bond will ensure that the injured host doesn't completely die, potentially allowing them to be revived (sort of like the concept of "mostly dead" from the Princess Bride). And that's what happened to XY with her assassination. But XL says that if he came too late or if TSJ and ZX's people hadn't poured their spirit power into XY, then he wouldn't be able to save her.

So my speculation is that if TSJ and ZX's people hadn't poured their spirit power into XY, she still wouldn't "completely" die (while XL was still alive), but she would be "more" dead and past the point where she could be revived. Which is basically dead. That's the only way I can reconcile the logic of it in my mind.

Also, if the lovers turn against each other or try to remove the bugs, the hosts will die. XL is only able to break their connection by killing (rather than removing) the bugs, which requires the use of one of his lives + stabbing himself in the heart.

I assume that if both hosts are mortally injured at the same time, then they can both be killed. It's not clear what would happen if one of the hosts was on the brink of death due to natural causes (i.e., old age).

One important point to note: in the novel Jing's grandmother uses a different type of poisonous bug to extend her life. This results in Jing finding out that poisonous bugs come with a price. At the end of the host's life, the poisonous bug will consume the host from the inside until their body, soul and essence are all consumed. No corpse will be left behind.

If, despite the poisonous bug connection, XY had 100% died as a result of the assassination, the example of Jing's grandmother suggests that both she and XL would have their bodies, souls and essences consumed by the poisonous bugs. I'm not sure XL would survive that (e.g., think about all the emphasis they've put on the fact that he has nine lives but only one heart) no matter how many lives he had left.

XL spares XY and himself from that fate by using one of his lives (and stabbing himself in the heart) to kill their bugs, which breaks the connection between them.

Also about  "In the novel, we don't know how he gets the information, but he is still the one who suggests transferring the bug and he is immediately able to control the connection between him and XY so that XY can't feel his pain or emotions (except for one instance where he intentionally lets her feel his pain). "

When did he intentionally let XY feel his pain?

Chapter 32 of the novel.

Xiao Yao turned to leave and Xiang Liu said: “A word of reminder, the voodoo bug still connects us so if you tell the world I’m Fang Feng Bei, don’t blame me if I hurt your heart and you die from the pain.” Xiao Yao stopped and looked back at Xiang Liu. “Don’t believe me?”  Xiao Yao’s heart was suddenly cut with so much pain like a sword pierced it, the pain so excruciating she fell on the ground in a slump

Xiang Liu appeared to hold her life in his hands and he coldly said “If you don’t want to die, then don’t say a word!” Xiao Yao was in such pain her face was ashen and cold sweat dotted her face. She sat up and smiled. “Is this the reason you never had time to go to Jiu Li to break the voodoo bug? You want to control my life and death so that one day you can hold me hostage to your will? General Xiang Liu, you really are something!”

Xiang Liu smiled and turned to leave. With a whistle his white condor descended and he vaulted on its back and disappeared in the clouds. The pain in Xiao Yao’s heart vanished but it was so painful that her body was still weak and needed some time to recover her strength. After some time, she slowly got up and walked towards town.

XL has greater spiritual power so he is able to control the bug better than she can cos she lost her power from the 8 tail fox. When she's able to feel certain things it's because XL experienced unexpected things so he lost control momentarily before keeping a firm hold again.

@AH Thank you for sharing. But is XL injured or something at that point, which is why XY felt such pain?

He doesn't seem to be injured at that point in the narrative, but the novel doesn't clarify how he is able to cause XY so much pain through the connection. In my mind, there are at least three possibilities:

(1) XL is so powerful that he can cause XY pain through the lovers' bug connection even if / when he is not personally experiencing any pain;

(2) XL was able to send more pain than what he was currently experiencing through the connection (e.g., by tapping into or amplifying his current or past physical and emotional pain); or

(3) XL was actually experiencing that much pain at that point (keeping in mind that this can include emotional pain and he's about to leave XY + is intentionally causing her pain in this scene) and he just lets XY experience it unfiltered.

Given the dynamics of the scene, I feel like the implication is that scenario 1 is the most likely.

I sped read the novel, binge watched the episodes that have aired, and skipped a lot in both... so my collective knowledge is a bit patchy and mixed up. Plus this is maybe open to interpretation. That said, my sense is that XY never thought that XL was in love with her, but there were times that she thought they were genuinely friends and that he cared about her to some extent. So she still ends up feeling hurt when he intentionally acts cold and tries to create distance between them.

In XY's defence, XL does a lot of things to make it harder for her to recognize his true feelings. He runs hot and cold, sometimes seeming soft in one moment, only to hurt her in the next. He makes deals for things that he's happy to get but that aren't his true objective (e.g., meeting one request without question / getting a mountain peak where he can bury his soldiers) to mask his real objectives. He uses their connection (he feels her pain / her dying might result in him dying) as an excuse for why he helps her. And sometimes he is even intentionally cruel to her to make sure that she misunderstands his feelings.

From what I remember, XY never found out that XL suggested transferring and willingly received the lover's bug fully knowing what the bug was (meaning, he already knew at that point that he had feelings for XY - otherwise he would be risking both their lives). She finds out that XL knew some information about the bugs before she did, but not the full extent. And she doesn't accept the idea that their bugs and their connection is just like the bugs and connection that the Voodoo King describes, because that would necessarily mean that she loved XL and XL loved her for 70+ years at that point.

yea the girl is able to compartmentalize and let her mind run away from actual truth.

same with her cousin being in love with her  - the selective hearing and ignoring her brother's obvious feelings.

She also tests XL/FFB - she would make flippant remarks..wait , didnt get the response quick enough or change her mind cos she didnt want to hear brutal rejection and changes topic

chase_kayden:So is there gonna be a confrontation then between XY and XL of her trying to kill him but can't after XL tried to kill Xuan?

If the drama follows the novel, yes.
