I'm 1/2 way through My Journey To You and I love that it's a dark vibe aesthetically {even the poster is cool like that}. Atmospherically it's very dark which I like, the black hanfu, the darker lighting, lots of night scenes, etc. Any other recommendations like this visually? I also like the broody SML. haha Requirement: it has to be fairly new. 2022+ and historical. Korean or Chinese.

On my list so far I have

- The Scholar Who Walks the Night
- I'm 1/2 away through devil and fairy but I fcan't quite get into it and it's not dark enough atmospherically for me.
- Kingdom
- Yin Yang Master: Dream of Eternity

And it's older but Bloody Romance has a very similar vibe to MJTY and MJTY's director's other works like Painted Skin: The Guo Jingming Edition and Wuliang have the same vibe.

Shogun  (jp)
Nirvana in Fire (ch)
The Crowned Clown (kr) - this is also available as a movie. The movie was great and would also fit into this category
Winter Begonia (ch)

  • Dong Lan Xue - Dark leads, dark setting and dark story, overall fairly moody with even shady leads
  • Ripe Town - dark, gritty and realistic
  • A Familiar Stranger - dark and intense vibes, a bit less dark than the others iirc
  • Assassin Academy - This one could be a bit lighter but I remember it being surprisingly gritty for a mini cdrama
  • Eternal Brotherhood - Another, dark, gritty and realistic. Very, very moody with the colours, themes, characters, even the poster. Very much giving Game of Thrones
  • The Mutations - Similar to Ripe Town and especially Kingdom, dark, gritty and realistic.
  • Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty - Also has quite a bit of the darker aesthetic. Maybe not as much as the one you described though.

I've not watched them yet but In Blossom, The Longest Day in Chang'an, and Novoland: Eagle Flag seem to be fairly dark too.
