I'm looking for something more-or-less specific, so before you recommend anything, please read my requirements. Thank you! (:

First of all, I'm looking mainly for mainland Chinese or Taiwanese (Hong Kong is OK too) stuff plus I'm not the biggest fan of modern Japanese cinema (especially if it's based on a manga) also not in the mood for Korean stuff.
I'm primarily looking for movies, but dramas are OK too (as long as they are what I'm looking for)

What I'm looking for: movies about youths, possibly troubled or delinquents, or in some way alienated or lost, maybe even gangsters or thugs. If they are still students, I want them to either play truant and just hang out with their buddies, go visit Internet cafes, maybe go earn money in some way (not necessarily legal) or get stuck at school and hate it/find it boring. If they are older, either freshly graduated or even older /let's say 30 years old/ but still immature, they can't be too successful - crappy job (or no job/part-time job), crappy girlfriend, crappy flat, cheap smokes - you get the idea.

I'm looking for something that delves into topics like alienation, rebelling against system and society, hopeless and/or mundane life, apathy (either one person's or entire society's apathy), dreams being shattered when confronted with real life (or having no dreams at all), young people's feelings against the backdrop of social changes, coping with crappy/dysfunctional families and poverty or money issues/homelessness/being kicked out of the house. Preferably urban setting.

I'm looking mainly for something more on a 'heavy' side, but funny or even heart-warming stuff is OK, as long as it's good.

I like watching 'boring' stuff like wandering aimlessly around the city, going for bike rides or people who smoke cigarettes next to neon signs for 5 minutes without saying anything. I care about cinematography so something with great care for details like editing, lightning or using long camera shots is welcome.

I like both classics and modern cinema, so year of production is not an issue.

What I'm NOT looking for:
- movies about bullying (unless the MC is the one doing bullying)
- movies set entirely in school
- romcoms
- movies about rich people
- movies about people who are 'misunderstood' because they have a 'misunderstood' hobby like watching anime or playing games

Some examples of what I'm looking for (they have different vibes but the underlying tone is more-or-less the same):

Daughter of the Nile
Goodbye South, Goodbye (they are older than typical teens, but have lots of crappy problems and just waste their life)
Growing Up
The Boys from Fengkuei
Time to Live, Time to Die
Once upon a Time in Highschool (I think it focuses on the school part too much, but everything else fits my description)
Monga
The Lobster Kid
Rebels of the Neon God
Winter Vacation

Movies I didn't like but suit this theme:
Friends Never Die
Dangerous Boys
Hot Young Bloods

If you have any questions, just ask them >.> I might come off as some arrogant movie-snob thanks to so many requirements in this thread, but it's only because I'm looking for something specific that can't really be googled.

Thanks for your time and your replies! :)

I can suggest Taiwanese movie 'A Brighter Summer Day'. It's on your PTW.   https://mydramalist.com/1872-a-brighter-summer-day

I haven't finished it yet and left it on hold but will finish it at some point. It's almost 4 hours long.

Not sure if it will suit, but I think at :

- https://mydramalist.com/14424-millennium-mambo (love story of young misfits)

https://mydramalist.com/8989-unknown-pleasures (two unemployed 19-year-olds spend their time faff around)

- https://mydramalist.com/8183-a-touch-of-sin (four hurt characters in today China who revolt)

- https://mydramalist.com/1674-kids-return (it's japanese but totally fits with what you want, story about two friends who don't like school and prefere go to the bars, steal and faff around, personnally I really like it)

- https://mydramalist.com/25335-burning (two misfits and a rich heir caught in a love triangle)

I think at other movies but not sure if it will suit, too social or old characters ... So I only choose that, hope you can find something you will like ;)

Thanks for your reply! I'm aware that Edward Yang's movies are something that I will probably like and I'm planning to watch all of his movies this month (:

Thank you!

I've seen Millennium Mambo and plan to watch Jia Zhang Ke's stuff (I've only watched one of his movies).

Would you be so kind and share these 'might or might not fit' movies?

https://mydramalist.com/33929-the-last-ride  quite a recent one but it seemed to fit your description I believe...

I saw you posted some recs and then deleted your post... I remember you mentioned: Luxurious Car, Orphan of Anyang, Shoplifters and Parasyte. Unfortunately I don't remember the rest, can you post again? Thanks

I deleted it because I think it's really out of this topic but I also spoke about Happy times by Zhang Yimou, a story about an attachment between an abandoned blind girl and an humble retired man.

Most of my recommendations come from HK but I think they're among the best youth films that I've watched:

Dangerous Encounters of the First Kind (1980)

The Happenings (1980)

Nomad (1982)

School on Fire (1988)

The Crossing (2018)

And yeah some of Edward Yang's films would definitely fit especially: Mahjong, Taipei Story, Terrorizers.

Sorry, didn't notice this edit earlier - I'm okay with Japanese cinema as long as it's not the 'based on a manga and super cringy' genre. Not sure if you know what I mean, but your recs look promising (and not cringy), I'll check them out.
