Good afternoon I'm new here, so I'd like to ask for some guidance first. Can anyone recommend a good Japanese or Korean movie/drama about family conflicts or difficult relationships in it?  Starting from a simple "conflict between fathers and sons" and ending with something criminally serious, I have a high threshold for perceiving content. Maybe something Chinese, I'm just not familiar with Chinese cinema outside of Hong Kong martial arts films.

Hi and welcome! My top recommendation for this type of drama is Go Ahead, which is a 2020 Chinese drama. It is essentially about a family that is created from 2 households: one is a divorced dad who is a cop and raises his son. The other is a widowed dad who has his own noodle shop and is raising both his biologica daughter in addition to his adopted son (from a woman he did not successfully match-make with). The dads work together (not romantically) to raise the three kids, but each of them have their own issues. I also like that this spans from childhood, adolescence/high school, to adulthood. It is top rated for a reason :)

Thank you! Sounds attractive, I added drama to the plans!

Movie recs:

So for family movies that have some drama but nothing deadly/crime like:
Lightning up the stars -chinese movie  ->  he is a funeral home owner, she is a little girl that wants her dead grandma back and voila.
Bunny Drop - Japanese movie -> nearly the same story as lighting up the stars
Making Family - koren/chinese movie -> little boy looks for his father
Like Father, Like Son - Japanese movie -> has quite a bit of angst. 2 Families discover their sons have been switched at birth.
Present Perfect - Thai movie -> an aunt gets her niece for a few days. The ending is quite surprising. Its more what you look for in terms of happy to drama
Shoplifters - Japanese movie -> family of pseudo criminals live together tillll .....well its more what you look for

I can speak - korean movie -> this probably more what you meant. It absolutely became something I id not expect and went from happy to serious
Forgotten - korean movie -> eldest son is abducted, returns but wello. drama unfolds. it has actually all but the happy part that you look for and is one I highly highly recommend
Home Sweet Home - Chinese movie -> mysterious person starts to live with a family. It fits more what you look for
Hope - korean movie -> this one is utterly devastating to watch. Its about a family that goes from one day to the next through something utterly tragic and now they have to move on with it

Angst movies with surprising end:
Blood and Ties - korean movie -> daughter finds a secret out from her fathers.
Old Boy  - korean movie -> wello anything I say I a spoiler here.
Nobody knows - Japanese movie - > a mother leaves her 4 kids alone to fend for themselves. its the story of those 4.
Drama Stage 3: Everyone is there - korean movie -> the twin sister returns when her sister is bullied. the ending is very very surprising.
My Little Baby Jaya - korean movie -> his daughter gets murdered and he is out for revenge
Recalled - korean movie -> she has amnesia, wakes up  with a husband she doesn't know. Its good but angst and defo not an ending I had expected.
The Uncle - korean movie -> now this has a ton of angst and a ton of mess-up ness. It tells the story of a girl that cannot walk and her uncle .  It is an arthouse movie so seriously be warned. it is unforgettable if you like arthouse

House of Bluebird - morning kdrama with some serious family issues and also crime.
The Suspicious Housekeeper - mystery kdrama, healing
