He participated in the 1st Teichiku Records Newcomer Contest in 1952 during his high school years and won. The following year, in 1953, he debuted with Teichiku Records with the song "Yogiri no Sakaba."
His popularity sharply declined in 1965 when he was investigated for marriage fraud against his fans. Subsequently, it was revealed that the woman involved had been implicated in previous similar incidents, and due to insufficient evidence, Shirane was not prosecuted.
