They went on to debut in September 1991. His first lead role in "Asunaro Hakusho" in 1993 as an actor as well as his subsequent appearance in "Wakamono no Subete" in 1994 resulted in him gaining a lot of attention as an actor. He appeared in the movie "Shoot!" in 1994 and won the Nikkan Sports Film Award and the Elan d'Or Award for Newcomers.
Became the first male star to advertise lipsticks for the Kanebo Testimo II range, in February 1996. The brand's sales figures nearly tripled within a single month, since the launch of the campaign.
In December of 2018, he opened a Weibo account that resulted in more than 290,000 followers on the first day. In May 2020, his Instagram account was opened and netted more than 1 million followers on the first day. He began his solo artist activities in 2019 and released his first album "Go with the Flow" through Victor Entertainment in 2020.
Currently, he holds the top three spots for the most-watched Japanese TV drama of all time, with "Hero", "Beautiful Life" and "Good Luck!" ranked respectively. Each of these three dramas scored a viewership rating of over 30% for its pilot. In addition, he also made Japanese TV drama history, when all 11 episodes of "Hero" received over 30% of viewership. He also currently holds the record for starring in the most "Getsu 9" dramas as of 2017.
He has been married to singer Kudo Shizuka since December 5, 2000. He has two children with her, the models Cocomi and Koki. His younger brother, Kimura Shunsaku, was a member of Japan's National American Football Team.
