In his later years, Shoji also became a storyteller of Yamagata folk tales, sharing them annually in his hometown. He continued acting well into his 80s, even after leaving Seibu Keisatsu (西部警察).
Shoji’s wife of many years passed away in February 2007 from stomach cancer. His daughter, Shoji Mayuri (庄司麻由里), is a freelance announcer.
Shoji died on September 15, 2015, in Setagaya, Tokyo, at the age of 92 from pancreatic cancer.
