He is an incredibly talented writer. His screenplays are Palanca award-winners, and his first novel manuscript "Rancho Dyanggo" also gained traction in the literary world and was awarded the Grand Prize from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).
He is an award winning filmmaker. His was awarded the L' Etoile d'Or (Golden Star) at the Marrakech Film Festival in 2002 for his first-ever short film, "Batang Trapo". It was also the Best Short Film awardee at the Gawad Urian Awards. It also won First Prize and Best Short Film for Children at the Gawad CCP Para Sa Alternatibong Pelikula At Video and the Ishmael Bernal Award for Young Cinema at the Cinemanila International Film Festival. He won major awards from the San Sebastian International Film Festival, the Golden Screen Awards, and the Festival De Cine De Los Pueblos Del Sur in Venezuela, South America. He received accolades from Cinemanila and Cinemalaya and recently won the trifecta of Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay at the CineFilipino Flm Festival for "Ang Kwento ni Mabuti". He also bagged Best Screenplay and Jury Prize Winner for "Sitio" at the 2013 CinemaOne Film Festival.
