Boring plot, empty characters and barely any action

Alchemy of souls season 1 exceeded my expectations so my excitement was at peak for season 2. I couldn’t wait to see naksu back in her original body. Since the bar was set soo high i thought writers will take everything to the next level, more plot twists, more action, more magic and more alchemy of souls. But season 2 was nothing more than a story of marriage of convenience couple going back and forth with their feelings. Yes!! This season was made to bring naksu and Uk together thru the overused “Fate” and “amnesia”plot.

The main lead couple was going to end up together eventually but the story could’ve been soo much better than this . Writers incorporated rapunzel’s story in the show 😭 . I am not even joking as FL had amnesia and she was trapped in a room by her mother and awaited a prince. And then Jang uk walks in as expected. They tried to bring in the same chemistry that yul and crown prince had with mudok but failed. I won’t say that the main lead couple had zero chemistry, they definitely had chemistry but what he had with mudok was magical. The new FL could’ve had her own identity but she was forced to live under naksu’s shadow.

All characters lost their perspective roles, Park Jin become a comic character and had no role left in the story. Yul was left to suffer again with his one sided feelings and guilt. Dang gu,cho yeon and crown prince also had no part to play in the plot. There were all empty characters with no specific role.

I forced myself to finish season 2 just to find out if Yul will live or not. Otherwise I had lost all interest in episode 1.

Every masterpiece has a copy !! QOT feels likes a copy!

I was eagerly waiting for this drama and successfully avoided all the spoilers. Queen of tears broke records and it added more to the hype. I got even more excited.
It’s good for a one time watch but I will not sit through 16 episodes to watch it again. Especially the 2nd half of the drama is absolute chaos and not in a good way. It’s not even average but plain terrible.
I didn’t entirely dislike the drama but there were some parts that get on your last nerves. For instance the part when FL gets amnesia and ML goes to jail. It was absurd as there was no originality in the plot.
I constantly felt like I have watched the same things in some other kdramas. Specifically last episodes felt like copy paste from crash landing on you except the ML took the bullet for the FL and in CLOY the FL took the bullet to save ML in the end. And the way hyu woo was walking in snow in the middle of no where to find hae in. Same scene in cloy. It kept bothering me until I couldn’t take it anymore and didn’t watch most of the last episode bcz it was soo obvious.
I feel like strong cast couldn’t make up for the weak and incomplete story line.. the writer had nothing to add in the story that they copied from other dramas. Lastly there was just too much crying all the time it got me annoyed.

Unnecessary dragged

The first episode had me hooked but as the show progressed the story became just like any other Kdrama. Don’t know why some scenes and characters reminded me of true beauty. The character tae sung had uncanny resemblance with true beauty’s seo jun. Anyhow i wish there was more depth to the characters as female lead seemed shallow and same with some other characters. The female lead got on my last nerves with her stupid choices. The more chances she gets to go into the past the more dumb and careless she behaves and gets herself in trouble. I do feel bad for sunjae.

I still continued to watch it but Episode 8 is when it all went down. I was okay with the cliches too but episode 8 completely ruined it for me. Time travel become a joke at this point. Even sunjae’s feelings become a joke based on how conveniently Sol expressed her feelings 14 years later and he didn’t ask for an explanation? Like his feelings literally become so irrelevant after this point because no matter what sol does he kept clinging to her like a puppy. I hated to watch her travel back into past again. I wish they had ended the drama at episode 8 where they confessed feelings and got together. THE END but noo the writers had to drag the story even if they have nothing new to add to develop the plot.
I can easily guess what the final episodes are going to be about soo not curious at all.
Ps I know it’s seems stupid to drop a drama soo close to the finale but it cringe so bad when things get lame. I gave this drama a fair shot but…

Do I need to say anything at all !! 100/10

What’s not to like about this show! Everything including the story, the characters, the dialogues is 10/10 .
I like to see characters having deep meaningful conversations, it’s important to understand what made them connect with each other (atleast for me) and the story unfolds every detail. Nothing was left unaddressed or incomplete. My heart was full at the end of the show.
Captain Ri and Yoon seri set such a high bar with their chemistry. I was rooting for them from the start. The 2nd lead couple had good chemistry too and their story was adorable even thou they couldn’t end up together.
It’s one of those rare shows where the story, the cast and the execution was all in right place. It had the right balance of comedy, drama, suspense and romance. I have already rewatched it 3 times and can’t seem to get bored if it.

Too slow

The story had potential but the pacing was too slow. I dragged myself to watch the show but after a certain point i couldn’t take it anymore. The plot is too plain and boring most of the time. Mostly a show captures attention in the beginning episodes but I kept waiting till 3rd and 4th episode to find a reason to continue watching it. I heard all praises for this drama and hence thought to watch. The story is inspiring but a good story alone won’t convince the audience to watch a drama.k Although it does deliver some important messages of self love and all but still I just couldn’t connect with the show that much.
I loved seon gyeom‘s character. He was sweet and the way he reflected on himself was inspiring. The 2nd lead couple’s chemistry was better than the main lead.

Shadow assassin lost her direction and purpose !!

I don’t write review for every k-drama i watch. But alchemy of souls is worthy of a review. I felt an itch and needed to get it off my chest.
Alchemy of souls is a blend of fantasy, action and romance with a historical backdrop. There is no historical fantasy k-drama closer to its level.

Although story is quite intriguing but can’t say it’s totally unique. There are many old tropes that are used in this drama. For instance, an assassin with a goal to avenge her family falling in love with her enemy is nothing new. Naksu lost her powers and had to rely on Jung uk to retrieve her powers back, but in the process she forget what her actual goal was. She kept pushing the ML to achieve his goal but lost her own way ! THAT was disappointing considering she was a total badass assassin. She became a character who lost her purpose and was left incomplete and unfulfilled.

Then comes our male lead with a broken past, Jung uk born under the kings star with prophecy to be world’s saviour and declared “special”. His past and identity crisis is used to make him get away with everything. It’s cool up to a certain point but when a character becomes too invincible, their journey becomes too predictable . Further naksu is the one who always gets him out of trouble.. her role was confined to that only.. Individually both characters had flaws but as a couple they complemented each other. Their chemistry is definitely something. Slow burn romance is more convincing. I enjoyed their bond as master and pupil but I didn’t thought it will last till the end and we will never get to see assassin naksu again.

Although the love square with mudok and three guys was alot to take in .Specially the crown prince falling for a servant was bit too much. However Yul’s past with naksu was touching and i felt every bit of his emotion. He silently protected her. I wish he had confronted naksu and told her that he know about her identity. I wonder why he stayed silent and never told her!!. I also don’t understand why she carried Yul’s whistle with her!!

My major disappointment is that naksu’s role was minimised. I was expecting more out of her character as an assassin since this was not romcom but an action fantasy drama. I wanted to see her more in action. Meanwhile male lead was overhyped by the writers with the saviour plot. Every superhero movie has the same plot “he is the saviour” and all.
Yul was introduced as a powerful and smartest mage yet his role was just that of a bystander as he knew everything about naksu but still did nothing!!! Mater Lee had better role to play than him. Crown prince unexpectedly became one of my favourite.
Music was good, “ just watching you” is my favourite track from the drama.

Simple and cute

I started watching this drama with zero expectations hence i was able to enjoy it , it slowly grows on you.
It’s a cuteeeeee romcom and that’s all there is to this drama. Nothing more. The story is quite plain and plot is simple. For a drama with North and South Korea relationship as backdrop, you may expect more to the plot but there is no tension or many ups and downs in the story. So if you want to watch a light short romance with no chaos and no villains then this drama is for you. Because the focus is only on the main couple. I watched 4 episodes in one go and i am lil sad that it’s only 8 episode drama.

The main lead couple have good chemistry. They have enemy to lovers relationship. I enjoyed their constant bickering. Their first encounter was hilarious. They slowly grow on you and you crave more of their moments together. The male lead is soooooo cutee…For once a celebrity character who actually behaves like a celebrity and not like a common person. Although there isn’t much to his role but i enjoyed his cute arrogant nature. FL is neither too sweet nor too harsh. She reminds me of Dan from crash landing on you. There aren’t many other notable characters so that’s that. But not a bad watch for a 8 episode drama.
