What can I say? I just really enjoyed it

Is this drama the greatest drama out there? No. But unironically I just really enjoyed it. I looked forward to thursdays because I had this silly (affectionate) little drama that made me happy once a week.

I went into it with no expectations, knowing not really much about it and when I saw Viki had picked it up I thought why not give it ago (especially since it's very rare for Japanese dramas to get picked up by a streaming service in my country) and I'm glad I did because I found this special little drama. It gave me a similar feeling I felt when I watched Prince of Legend but there was something about this drama that personally I liked just a little bit more.

I really love the message that appearance isn't everything. That kindness can be something that makes you "cool". Ryoma became a character I really came to love because of his kindness and the way he cared so much about those around him. I loved how each of the "traditionally attractive" cool boys all had different and interesting sides to them and we got to explore their stories outside of their appearance/being a cool boy. I loved the bonds that they had formed with each other by the end.

If you're looking for something fun to watch, something to pass the time, something that doesn't take itself seriously I totally recommend this drama!

It could have been so much more... Where is the comedy?

(spoiler-free review)
I'm very disapointed :/
It's kind of weird to expect things for drama of this style, but I was actually waiting for something.
Something funny. Something original. Something over-the-top. Something refreshingly cringe.

It's something j-drama actually does well, and that I enjoy. Like Fake Motion, Bad Boys J, Prince of Legends... It's cringe, it's hilarious but at the end, I fall for them and ends up finding them all super cool in their hilarious ways.
And that's what I wanted but... What is this?

From the first episode, I wondered if they would go for the full-on over-the-top with the crazy concept, or doing it very seriously even though the concept is crazy. Obviously both are different style of comedy, but both work.
Here it was a weird mix of both, where they put not very well done comedy, while being very serious about the concept, and it ended up being flat.

The storyline in itself is fine, it's what I expect from this type of drama, and that is good. The important things are the details : how will they work with the clichés, overthrowing it, making it ridiculous. But no. They just... go with the clichés. The don't adapt it, they don't have a nice twist, nothing.

The serious boy is a serious boy. The handsome boy is a handsome boy. The nice guy is a nice guy. That's all.

Every episode I saw was just : "That's all?"
I was waiting for the joke to fall, the twist to happen, like "haha! Something is coming right? They won't stop here!" but no. They really stop here.

They had such a crazy concept, but don't go crazy at all. Come on! It's a japanese drama! You can do whatever you want, doing stupid things, over-the-top gags! What is this?????

I'm doing this review spoiler-free, since the drama is getting subbed right now, but I'm super disapointed. Still, I don't regret watching it for Miyase Ryubi and Hosoda Kanata, but it could have been so much more !

You can be cool even if your not the coolest person

I’ve never seen a drama where the trope was about who’s the coolest man in the world, and I have to say I actually kinda liked it. I always saw this on Viki and I never watched it, but I decided why not and it actually was pretty good and I don’t regret watching it except for that weird ending. I originally only watched it because Keito was gonna be a guest star on it (sadly for only 1 ep) and I wasn’t thinking I was gonna continue it, but I actually became obsessed. Just a warning spoilers ahead. So Ryoma accidentally got accepted into a high school that’s only meant for cool boys and he was turned down by all the other schools so he basically went to the school, but what did he see? It was a whole bunch of cool boys while he’s the opposite of a cool boy because he isn’t the most attractive, he’s not strong, he doesn’t have a hobby, his hair is a bowl cut, and he even stepped in poop and if you are a cool boy you never step in poop. While his time at high school he made relationships with other cool boys for example Wakabayashi-kun he’s a very zesty cool boy and was Ryoma’s first friend, Jingu he only knows kendo and wants to be in the tourney to help promote Kendo, Shu who is a poor cool boy that was judged for eating grass and bread because he can’t afford stuff and his apartment was run down, and lastly Ichinose who doesn’t know what love is and even helped him find his lover and save her from trying to k!ll herself. Also Yanagi was Ryoma’s rival to win Sakurai’s love since Yanagi fell for her ever since they were children and they were childhood friends. Yanagi also promised Sakurai that he will take her to the coboy tourney. Also I have to mention my favorite Todo (keito) even though he was only in ep 4 he slayed it so much and even helped make Ryoma feel more confident about himself and even got him to rizz Sakurai up, he also helped Jingu get seen by girls because people were tired of him doing Kendo, but Todo helped jazz it up and girls then noticed him again. I also love Ryoma’s parents because there so hilarious. Through all the hardships and gacha pon cards this show was absolutely amazing, but the disappointment was that we never saw who won the cool boy tournament even though the show was revoking around it.

Whoever wrote this must have been drunk... But I'm so glad they did

Every episode I questioned why I was watching it, but neither me (nor my mum) could put it down.

I'm not sure what I was expecting when going into this drama. What I wanted was something silly to distract myself from the stress of job interviews and applications.... and oh boy was this drama it. It is hard to pin exactly what I liked about it, but I found myself smiling most episodes and laughing about the ridiculousness of every situation.

The drama has a sort of completed feeling. Each episode, except forthe first, leads you to explore the lives of the main cool boys through the eyes of Ikeda Ryouma. Despite its bizarre concept, it had a lot of meaningful messages and ended up feeling like a warm hug, when you weren't laughing at the insane situation they were in.

I understand this style is not for everyone. However, if you want something easy to watch which will keep you entertained and leave you with a complete and warm feeling, give this a try. There is nothing massively new and exciting, but the drama also fails to be cliche. It was refreshing to see healthy family and friend dynamics and I really loved the plot, acting and the music.

Not a BL, But story is quite bland.

As mentioned, this show seemingly isn't a BL, which is totally fine but the show feels... empty.

Basically, a lot of the characters and pretty boys and we deal with the main character who is "average". The plot is ok but it's pretty bland and a lot of the situations feel quite forced. This show feels like it was made to simply show off hot guys and then give these "deep" messages about how looks don't mean everything..... while being a show about hot guys.. I don't think i've ever said this as a gay person, but this show would really be better if it had bl aspects added to it. Atleast that would give it some sort of purpose outside of it's quite bland plot.

In 3 episodes I honestly don't care about anyone except the MC. He is quite charming and anything funny or emotional mostly comes out him, but he really isn't enough to call this a good show. The side characters are forgettable, especially the pretty boys. The jokes and emotional beats rarely hit, it seems to be an episode/situation type show where each episode will revolve around a different guy, which is... okay. I'm not going to hate on this type of format, cause it can work, but the way they've presented the plot and the morale direction of the story, it's questionable at best.

If your interested in attractive guys, This show is for you, good story telling? at the moment, probably not.
