Lee Ping Bin joined Taiwan’s major film studio Central Motion Pictures Corp. as a camera assistant in 1977. He was involved in the early, pioneering days of the Taiwanese New Wave. Since “A Time to Live and A Time to Die,”(1985) Lee has collaborated with Hou Hsiao Hsien on “Dust in the Wind,”(1986) which won the Cinematography Award at the Nante Three Continents Film Festival, “City of Sadness,”(1989) and “The Puppetmaster,”(1993) winner of the Best Cinematography Award at Taipei Golden Horse Film Awards. Lee’s other film works with Hou Hsiao Hsien include “Goodbye South, Goodbye,”(1996) “Flowers of Shanghai,”(1998) “Millennium Mambo” (2000), which won the Best Cinematography Award at Taipei Golden Horse Film Awards, and “Kohi Jikou.”(2003).
In 1988, when Taiwan film industry began its downfall trajectory, Lee was invited to work in Hong Kong film industry. He had worked for Hui Ann’s “My American Grandson,”(1990) “Summer Snow,”(1994) winner of the Best Cinematography Award at Taipei Golden Horse Film Awards, and “Eighteen Springs.”(1997).
His work with Wong Kar Wai in “In the Mood for Love”had won him the Prix du Jury a Un Technicien at the Canne Festival, as well as Best Cinematography Awards in the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival and the Asia-Pacific Film Festival.
