What nonsense is this?

I seriously thought that they would actually focus on his journey and it would be more introspective but this, I just don't know what the point of it was.

I'm getting real tired of shows using Europe as a country, like if the differences between one country and another were at the level of between states in the US. It was very clearly not Brussels and it was annoying they were trying to sell me it was. I don't know, the ML could have actually gone to Budapest and the story could have been set there, but I guess it would sell less? Maybe many people don't know where Budapest is?
This movie was way more melodramatic than it needed to be, or at least the melodramatic bits needed to be in other moments not the ones chosen. At points it keeps dwelling on it but I just couldn't care, meanwhile things like the fact his mother's corpse was sold is mentioned a few times for shock value but doesn't have the emotional depth that other less interesting moments have, for example.
I started to roll my eyes when he kept finding locals and would get beaten up for the stupidest things, it was so unrealistic and even the lighting changes between those rough moments and the end of the movie. Now he made it I'm sure he won't bump into anyone that will beat him to nearly death... *logic not found*. Once ok, but he was beaten up so many times or pushed around like a pathetic box of potatoes too many times in a short time span to be realistic in my opinion.

As other reviewers have mentioned as well, that's not how the process for refugees works, not only in Belgium but also in other European countries. If they wanted more realistic melodrama they could have tackled for example that there has been cases of abuse and terrible conditions in refugee centres.

Then he finally has the court meeting and he just runs out because of the girl and somehow he still gets the refugee status? Excuse me? I guess he didn't even need to go in the first place then, "this court case could have been an email".

The female lead was a very unlikeable character and I still don't understand what her deal was. She was a spoiled brat. She clearly comes from a family with money and she rebels against the father because her mother passed and I guess she's against assisted death but it was not her decision anyway but the mother's? So she has a tantrum that gets her into trouble and that kind of life. I still don't understand why the gangsters would care so much about her in the end, and if they did to that extend they would have found her in whatever country she went to. Equally unrealistic is that she used drugs but didn't suffer the consequences of any of it.

The romance here could have been a side story and I thought it would, but as a main plot it's just not there. Their love doesn't grow in a realistic way nor it was realistic that he would risk so much for her. Two minutes prior he was telling her about the razor and how he and his mother were ready to end their lives than be deported, the next he's leaving the court to run after her even though, from his knowledge and perspective, he doesn't know what or if anything has happened to her. Also, call the police or something? I don't get it. He's the masochist type I guess, he didn't have enough hardships that he decided to put her baggage onto his shoulders too. Sorry but I don't think many people would do that for a fling. Sure, they say they love each other but I felt nothing other than "boy, you have a problem".

The "airport" at the end was the cherry on top, and the FL in that ending was quite puzzling until you remember that she has daddy's money I guess.

Acting is good but it can't save the mess it's the writing and the overall execution. I don't know how different the book might be but I'm zero interested after watching this movie I'm afraid.

I have loved this cast since kp and Tong long before that. They did not disappoint at all. Their acting was amazing like always and story was great.
I loved to see a other side of all of them and the dancing 🥰🥰 my goodness it made me melt.

And then there was the plottwist making it even better.

Definitely recommend watching it.

Disturbing: I'm not sure about the what and why, icky but kinda grossly fascinating

This very short movie of about 15 minutes is very indie as it focus on a very odd and relatively disturbing topic as one of the character has a strong secret kink. No judgment from my part, but I personally found it quite gross and icky.

The camera does not shy from the disturbing details and the main actor does an overall convincing job. The filmmaking has a very strong approach on featuring the specific kink of the main character. It is kinda fascinating in a way and I felt a bit sick watching it.

It is impactful in a way but I am absolutely not sure of what the movie is trying to say or why...Honestly there are many fascinating elements in the psyche of the main character that would be interesting to explore...But the short length of the movie prevent any kind of plot & character development.

I would not recommend this movie as I am so unsure of what to think of it after watching it. It is pretty short so you might want to give it a shot if you like indie movies featuring somewhat obscure and disturbing topic.

Visually stunning, but 'tragic' at its heart.

First of all, I want to say that if you happen to suffer from or deal with mental issues, this movie could be concerning since it lacks trigger warnings and has inconsistent handling of very sensitive material.

If you think this is a strangers-to-lovers romance movie that was filmed in a foreign country, technically, you are not wrong. But the core concept of this movie is far from the typical romantic movie you’ve seen. The idea is somewhat tragic: the FL is suffering depression and flew to Switzerland seeking assisted voluntary death (AVD), a morbid activity that’s legal there, and by chance, she meets another Pinoy, and strangely enough, they bond over the mutual understanding of AVD.

Visually, this movie offers the best views of the picturesque natural beauty of Switzerland. During the 1 hour 48 min running time, it almost feels like I’m watching a travelogue rather than a movie. Ironically, while this movie provides your eyes with breathtaking scenery and shows a few experiences you can add to your bucket list, the essence of it is disheartening. The dialogues could’ve been done in a better way, especially when the mental health issue is the midpoint of the movie’s narrative. Even as someone who doesn’t deal with serious mental issues, I found it depressing, especially the often juxtaposed scenes of emotional disarray of two people strolling across beautiful Swiss landscapes like it’s a sweet romcom.

Mental health is a sensitive topic to discuss in any medium, especially when it touches on the idea of ending one's life. While this movie attempted to encourage conversation about this topic, with some reminders of self-love, it wasn't being handled with the right amount of sensitivity. Just when I thought there would be a light at the end of the tunnel, the ending turned out to be gloomier than I expected. Tons of beauty shots couldn't save this movie. The way it romanticizes suicide is a bit problematic. It’s frustrating to see the lack of basic research by the filmmakers on the right approach to a sensitive subject.

In terms of acting, Kylie Padilla handles her character and scenes efficiently. Playing a character with such a significant psychological and existential burden is not easy. Gerald Anderson, on the other hand, isn’t really noteworthy. He has his charms, but they fail to impress beyond that. While Kylie and Gerald show a decent chemistry, their intended romantic dialogues sound contrived.

The only 10/10 Japanese movie so far

I was always into movies like this. Kingdoms, battles, etc… But this one was a truly masterpiece. The story was very interesting and catch my attention so fast. Kento was amazing in his character as Shin, a boy who’s dedicated to his and his best friend’s dream. And Ryo playing two characters as the king Eisei and the slave Hyou was quite something I never expected. From the beginning to the end everything got me surprised and stunned.

The fighting scenes were very nice and the battle for the throne between two brothers was interesting to watch. But the goal is Sei to unite China as one catch me really hard. For sure I’ll complete the whole series and recommend to watch it!

"One mistake can lead to irreversible regret"

The Pig, the Snake, and the Pigeon was a tough film to rate and harder to review. The film showed how different people react when death stares them in the eye. Do you attempt to mend your ways or seek a lasting legacy no matter how reprehensible?

Chen Kui Lin aka the Kuilin Kid made a name for himself by taking out not one, but two mob bosses. While lying low he discovers from a pharmacist who treats gangsters that he has stage 4 lung cancer. She works to convince him to do the right thing and turn himself in. After praying to General Guan and tossing the divination sticks nine times he goes to the police station to do just that. Problem being that an armored car had turned over and people were lined up to turn in the money they’d pilfered. While waiting he sees a wanted poster with the top three fugitives. He was ranked #3. At that moment he determines to take out the top two to improve his legacy.

The first half of the film had numerous brutal, no holds barred fights between Kui Lin and the cop Chen Hui and between Kui Lin and Hongkie. Hongkie was vile, a rapist, and deadly. No tears shed for anything bad happening to him. The second half of the film delved into the spiritual side and repentance. Even a killer like Kui Lin could grasp at the thread of hope. At least before the violence erupted into new disturbing levels.

I’ve never been an Ethan Juan fan but I have to admit he did an admirable job as the killer who could murder people easily but could also be quite affable and charming. He rescued at least two people and tried to save a third. That didn’t mean he was a good guy and it would be wrong to idolize him. His last violent act disturbed me greatly and threw me into a moral quandary attempting to understand his reasoning.* The final twist wasn’t much of a twist and in the end, it didn’t matter, at least to Kui Lin.

The Pig, the Snake, and the Pigeon had high production values and well shot fight scenes. The acting was quite good and Ethan Juan made it hard to not feel some empathy for his character. The story could be uneven and the final third of the film took too long to resolve. Far from glorifying the gangster lifestyle, it showed that three evils no matter how fair or repugnant they might appear to be needed to be vanquished. Interestingly, only one facing death had the courage to do something unorthodox to rid society of the animalistic ills.

The only way I could resolve the massacre at the cult was that after all the evil they had done including murder and destroying at least one child’s future, he thought they would continue their wicked ways . Many of the people in the cult who did not heed his warning knew it was a scam and were enforcers and the others who stayed behind were either in on it or so brainwashed that would continue to drive people to suicide or murder when ordered. The ambiguity of the ones left behind who were killed was very distressing to me and why I didn’t rate this film higher.
In the end, Kui Lin paid for his crimes and the pharmacist who got her three birds, actually a whole flock, with one stone was also facing a painful death herself.

Growing Pains. Worlds that cannot be reconciled. Standards that cannot be met.

This film has my heart. The narrative moves with a tone as fragile as lies, as delicate as first love, as fleeting as childhood. It also carries a heaviness that cannot be understated; a cold salty somberness that punches straight through you.

“If you have forgotten how to be a child you cannot teach children.” - Austin O'Malley

Though this is not a movie about adults forgetting to be childlike, but rather adults forgetting what it is like to live in the world of a child. Children make law out of adult’s black and white teachings. They know what’s wrong but they don’t know why. They know what’s right, but they don’t know how. That’s why what's rational for an adult and what’s rational for a child will never be the same. This movie is set in that gap. The space between adult and child. Despite this, this is in no way a story about teenagers or the bridge between these two worlds; in fact, the stark distinction between the methodologies of adults and children is a key feature of the film.

Can we judge the grown-ups from seeing things from within the established societal standards? I am adult enough to know that the conclusions they reached aren’t far from what I would have guessed.

Can we judge the children for lashing out when they aren’t able to articulate themselves within these standards? Can we blame a child for deviating from an expected emotional reaction? I am child enough to understand what it feels like to stumble through the dichotomy of these two worlds.

This film holds so much wisdom. Behind all of the lies, stands universal truths. There is no love perfect enough to protect the ones we love against the evils of the world. There is no evil terrible enough to conceal the glimpses of good. There is no standard that can perfectly be met. There is no monster. There is right and wrong and in between. And cats and pigs and happiness.

A Locked Room Murder Done Right!

I first heard of this drama because I am a fan of Greg Hsu but I ultimately gave this movie a try after watching the trailer. It is the first time seeing Greg play this type of character and the story sounded very interesting- I am always down for a good mystery.

This story of a locked room murder case is not something new but the first few minutes hooked me right in and I could tell this could be really good if it was done well. And it really was! After introducing the main plot, everything afterwards was fast paced. I was sitting on the edge of my seat and couldn't take my eyes off. It keeps you thinking about all the possibilities even when you think you know who the real killer is. Ugh, I just love a good crime mystery!

As a big mystery fan, I had some feelings about how the story would go but it still kept me interested. You think you know everything but you have to keep watching to really know. The characters were not new but still were intriguing and I wanted to see if I was right about the villian. Lots of twists and turns. It really keeps you second guessing the truth until the end. The big reveal at the end was done super well with great BGM and camera angles. In between, the little pieces of the real story and investigation being revealed was also done so good and natural. This is what crime movies should be like!

Also, most importantly, the director is really great at story telling and I can tell he really cared about how to show this story. All the dialogues and character introductions were also written amazingly, superb job with the scriptwriters there. Great scenes with high tension and dramatic music. Moreover, the acting was really just amazing! I am usually doubtful when trying Chinese movies but this one shows how a good suspense movie can be done! All the actors from Greg to Janine were amazing at bringing their characters to life! Greg is a very versatile actor and this movie is even more proof of that. It is my first time watching Janine and she was so good! Everyone was just great! Hoping to see these actors in more great projects!!

Also no spoilers- but I was almost right about the story! Nonetheless it was still very exciting to find out everything. Such a great watch! A locked room murder done right! It went by so fast and I may even rewatch! Totally recommemd for those who love suspense and mysteries!

Uninspiring Title. Nonetheless Solid Horror Flick

The act of a couple selling their home leads to strange and creepy circumstances that put their daughter in danger. It was obvious pretty early on that the husband had some role in the strange incidents happening around his and his wife’s daughter. The movie did a good job at incorporating some creepy and suspenseful moments. Having me waiver between the motive for the weird happenings being sinister or some ritual to protect the daughter from some unseen force, but with rotten food, black crows and a mysterious malevolent figure frequently appearing it became apparent that some evil plot was afoot. The nice twist was that this explored a similar theme as Annabelle Creation. Where in this case the husband had lost his 7 year old daughter, from a previous relationship, years earlier, to a horrible accident, and inconsolable with grief he made some terrible choices in an attempt to bring her spirit back to life.

Of course his attempt wasn’t as innocent as he was being led to believe and as a result he was duped into helping an evil priestess plot to regain a new body to possess. I felt for the father’s grief but I could not understand how he could essentially sacrifice the daughter he had with his new wife for the daughter who died. Moreover, it was unconscionable that he was asking a 7 year old to consent to her body being possessed by the spirit of her dead half sister.

The ending was confusing. It was clear that Ing’s body was taken over by Jaa. But it seemed for a second there that she’d become possessed by the evil entity as she appeared to have killed Ing’s mom. We later learn she survived, and killed Rattree whom we never see alive again after the attack. But last we see Ing/Jaa she appears to be a sweet little girl with no indication that evil resides within her. This was an entertaining horror movie with some nice twists. Definitely worth watching.

"You've lost your elephant again!?!"

Tony Jaa had to rescue his elephant little brother once again in Tom Yum Goong 2. Just as in the original, the story was a thin construct, simply there to let Jaa shine. This time he stayed in Thailand when he faced the dastardly devils who stole his elephant.

Kham’s elephant is stolen (again!) by a bad guy who is working for a badder guy. When Kham arrives at his lair, the bad guy is dead and his two nieces skilled in martial arts think Kham did it. The cops have already been called to set him up so he has Sue Sue and Ping Ping (Jeeja Yanin) after him as well as the police force. Sgt. Mark, now working for Interpol, arrives on the scene. Kham ends up with what looks like the entire population of Bangkok chasing him on foot, motorcycle, and car! The Big Bad, LC, wants Kham to help him disrupt the peace process taking place in Bangkok for Kantana, a country divided. With his life and the life of his elephant on the line Kham has to find a way out or at least a way through the formidable fighters standing between him and his elephant.

The story, much like the first one, had plot holes galore. The acting was adequate. None of that was too important. Watching Tony Jaa and Jeeja Yanin fight was more than enough reason to hit play.

I’d read numerous complaints with people unhappy that Tony used wires and CGI in this film. While it was great he did amazing stunts without either in previous films, at 37, I didn’t understand what the big deal was. Jet Li, Donnie Yen, and Jackie Chan all used fighting enhancements, especially as they aged. It makes for more fantastical if not realistic fights. The wires and CGI didn’t bother me, what did was the almost indestructible nature of Kham, The Big Bad, and the #2 bad guy. In the original, Kham took people out in their vulnerable places and when people went down, they stayed down. Regardless of how they staged them there were several creative fights. The motorcycle battle and an electrically charged confrontation were quite creative. Jeeja Yanin took a backseat to Tony in the fights, but was still able to demonstrate what makes her an exciting fighter.

Tom Yum Goong 2 had a more polished look than the first film, but I missed the intense fight choreography. Unless the bad guys were zombies, I’m not sure how they kept getting up again and again. Apparently, Kham wasn’t hitting them very hard because even a hardened body is not indestructible. Kham also seemed made of impervious rubber. Having said that, I always enjoy watching Tony Jaa fight and this was no exception. Delephantly (couldn’t resist an elephant pun!) for Jaa and martial arts fans only.

Emotional movie that touches on life and death

If you've seen the trailer, you may think this is a mystery/horror movie but don't be fooled. There are two arcs in this: first half fools you into thinking its horror and the latter half is emotional and a real tearjerker.

Basic rundown of this story without spoilers: the female lead notices her neighbors being weird and tries to find out the reason. There is also a strange light shop down the street that she is suspicious of. She works with her boyfriend to discover the truth. The director does a good job using color to portray the mood of the scene- using dark contrast for the "horror" and warm tones for other scenes. Additionally, the metaphor of using lightbulbs to represent human life is the heart of this movie. Characters enter the light shop to get their lightbulb, others don't have one, and some choose to give up their lightbulb.

You can tell they had a good budget and spent a lot of effort and time to create this movie. The transition between scenes and flashbacks was so smooth, you get pulled into the story even more.

There were a lot of familiar faces in this: Zhang Ruo Nan, Bai Yu Fan, Zheng Kai (cameo), Sun Qian, and Liu Yi Jun. They really embraced their characters. Bai Yu Fan and Zhang Ruo Nan's emotional scenes especially broke me. I was bawling at the end of the movie.

Completely crazy

I've never heard of the Tootsies, but it looked like it would be fun.

There were some over the top camp moments and some ridiculous moments. The first scene was awful - I don't like that sort of humour (I had to fast forward) but I hoped it would get better. It did!

They were some real laugh out loud moments. There were truly silly moments.

What I liked: despite having really silly moments, there were some real life issues in the film: pretending to like your partner's 'daughter', pretending not to notice something is slightly off with your partner, being desperate to have a child (for whatever reason!) and willing to do anything.

What I didn't like: stereotypical camp gay men. I accept there are lots of camp gay men, but at times it felt like too much. It didn't detract from the fun of the film though (because the campiness was part of the fun!)

It won't win any prizes but there was enough to keep me watching without being bored.

killing and eating, that's all

This movie is a relatively light hearted dark comedy (as contradictory as that may sound) the premise is pretty simple, not a very complicated or meaningful plot but if you're like me, that's more than enough to be entertaining. I love the two main leads dynamic, they can be relatable when lazy, ditzy, inexperienced and a joy to just watch having idle chatter or killing people. I found Mahiro's fight scenes quite nice as they were realistically scrappy and found out she's a stunt woman! so cool!

Not an essential, more a nice side quest to 'The Untamed' series' lore

After watching the amazing series The Untamed, I was looking forward this movie set up in the same universe as I truly enjoyed the parent drama. Here, the film features a side quest led by two secondary characters of The Untamed that I like a lot: Ghost General Wen Ning and Lan Si Zhui.

Even though I like the universe and the characters, I must admit that this movie is not a "must watch" but rather a "nice to see". Indeed the story is very predictable, I guessed everything very easily. There are almost no characters growth / development and very few links / references to the parent series. The scenario, quite classic, felt very "shonen" / "video game" and the film is too short to get truly emotionally invested in what happens to the protagonists.

I still enjoyed it thanks to the production value. The budget seems higher than in the drama for the special effects and make-up. There is an elevated feel to the monster / fantasy elements which is very enjoyable, especially in the fight scenes. The soundtract was pretty nice, though not memorable but with some lovely tunes as well as a soothing ending song.

I would recommend this to people that are missing The Untamed series. If you watch it without any big expectation, it is an easy watch featuring lovable secondary characters from this amazing drama. It does not bring anything new to the universe and original story but it is a quite short and entertaining watch.

Universal story

Can I say I was a bit disappointed in this film? I expected more or different, and I found things I've already seen elsewhere!

Let me explain myself!
The documentary tells the story of homosexuality in modern China (from 1949) through interviews with activists, professors, journalists and artists. And it tells a very familiar story, reminiscent of what the west went through. Homosexuality had been banned, outlawed, punished, people have been ostracized, beaten, pushed into hiding. Slowly the laws changed, society's perceptions changed, decriminalizing sodomy and eventually homosexuality at the end of 20th century. At the same time HIV/AIDS epidemic struck China with its full force and the government had to do something in order to slow it down: prevention, condoms etc. This made the LGBT people more visible. The economic growth opened China, the people were given a taste of liberty and they used it to put forward the idea that gay people (or tongzhi) are just humans like everyone else. Gays and lesbians organized themselves into clubs and then they opened bars and gained more and more tolerance. These clubs were also used to promote protection and prevention from AIDS. There were classes at the universities in social studies about homosexuality, film festivals were organized, art exhibitions as well. The backlash from authorities seems to have been minimal. The movie ends on a high note. By 2008, the acceptance of LGBT community in China was high and they were even fighting for equal marriage (even though the majority of people interviewed here were against it saying why should they mimic heterosexuals?!?!?).

I do not know much about China but I expected this to show us a different story. It didn't! Should it be a comfort to know that we in the west went through the same motions as they did? Maybe! This is just to show that no matter which country, they were all at one time intolerant of different sexuality.

This film is divided in 8 parts, each covering a subject connected with the LGBT history with poetic titles like "From Pitch Black To Light Grey", "From Parks to Grassroots" etc. explaining the evolution of chinese society's views on homosexuality. There are some interesting interviewees: a 70yr old gay man talking about his recent promiscuity or the youngish blogger spending time proudly outing people who do not want to be outed who were the extremes (just to show us they do exist) while the majority were university professors, lawyers and activist.

What happened next? I wager that the story is different today! I would love to see a documentary about the last 15 years in China!
