Wow that would be great !! :p
Move over Tae Kim. There's a new kid on the block ;)
ok, so it's so not that serious, lol, but I just felt like saying that.

Anyway, I found another site for people who are learning, but once again, I haven't really used it so I'm not reviewing it in the Japanese resources. If you guys use it and like it, please review it in the resources thread, here[/url]. It's similar in style and content to Tae Kim's famous guide but presented in a different way. I think it's worth checking out and can be used to clarify things that confuse you when using TK's site.

It's called [u]IMABI
, which is like a strange, fictional reading of 今日。

edited to add: They also have a section on classical japanese and it looks like they'll be adding info on dialects soon.
I'm trying to learn the language & i wish i can someday master it...also i've read alot of things about the culture and i love it :)
welcome chii-chan. I just added links to resources mentioned in this thread on the first page. You can also check out the japanese resources thread.

so like a dumbed down version of TK? cause that's what i need :p haha i'm gonna go check it out right now!

Boutux you still don't know if you'll be in Tokyo or elsewhere though right? let me know when you find out if you're in Tokyo maybe we can meet up :D it's still not for sure that i'm going, i'll find out tomorrow if my mother in law can take wednesday off work so we can drive down to Toronto to the passport office, both of our passports are expired, if we do it by mail it takes 20 days plus mailing time to get there and back so we may not get them in time. if we go to the passport office it's 10 days processing time. we don't want to risk not getting them in time after buying tickets eek! PLUS my brother in law isn't sure if they can do the paperwork they need to do that week, which is the purpose for us going. if it turns out they can't do it yet we won't be going. so it's sorta up to him to not procrastinate and get the info he needs quickly so we know if we can book our tickets or not.
we're also hoping for better deals on tickets, right now it's just shy of $1500 per person round trip. supposedly prices drop at around 11pm to midnight on tuesday night so i'm gonna stay up and check this tuesday, to get an idea of what kind of deals there are, and then we'll book it next tuesday i guess if we find out we can go..
so i'm trying not to get my hopes up too much in case it doesn't happen

and yeah i haven't posted anything but i usually do my lessons at work and the weekends are super busy at work right now i don't even have time to eat lunch which is when i do my studying. it's ice fishing and snowmobiling season and our store is right on the major trails and across the road from a lake. i get snowmobilers in huge groups all day saturday and sunday, i don't get much of anything done lol

i checked it out and i think i like this one. it seems simpler than tae kim's guide because it seems like it has a more thorough explanation of the various topics. i skipped lesson 1 in beginner cuz i knew all that stuff and went to lesson 2 which broke down the sentence structure and briefly discussed grammar of japanese language. i have never seen a guide break down sentence structure like this so i think i will use this one. it's alot to take in tho and it seems like it will be a bit overwhelming at times.
yeah i think i'll like this one also but i glossed over lesson 1 in beginner and it seems like you have to already have some knowledge going into it.. though i really like the way they break down pronunciations, that part would be really helpful to a total newbie as it goes more indepth than most sites that just give you the basic a i u e o.. this one explains how the accents change to differentiate different homonyms and stuff like that. quite informative.
oh you can add friends, i'm registered as LadyFaile if anyone wants to add me

are there direct flights to canada to japan? i'm trying to find what would be the cheapest route for me to travel. i can't travel through the usa cuz my visa has expired and i have to travel to barbados to renew it, tickets within the region are surprisingly expensive. barbados is 30-45 mins away and a flight can cost usd365.00 and up for a day flight round trip. so right now it's not worth it for me to spend the money to renew my visa. if i travel though europe it will cost me upwards of usd2500.00. if traveling thru canada is a cheaper option i will gladly take it. i don't care how many connections i will have to make.
there is actually! we have a small airport in our city, I can fly out from here and take one connection in Toronto and then it's straight to Tokyo from there. or there is a connection in Vancouver which would probably be the shorter route for you
Yay :) I'm glad you guys like it. I think the guy who runs it is like 17 or 18. Impressive.
