wow awesome Ceinwyn, thanks :D Kawaiko: really? it's pretty well put together from what i can tell so far
okay i am on imabi lesson 4 which is an introduction on the kanji(history of kanji in japan and ON and KUN readings) i feel like my brain was put in a washing machine and was repeated set to the spin cycle. i've read half way thru the lesson and i can't say what was explained in detail in the lesson at all. i am SO confused. no wonder i've been avoiding kanji like the plague.

i feel your pain. this is how i feel when i read Tae Kim's stuff about grammar..
i tried reviewing my notes today, i feel like i'm at a point where certain things are starting to click but not everything, so i should go back and review what i've done so i can move forward (i've been saying this for a few weeks but i've been too busy to put in my studying time). so anyway i tried to read through some of my grammar notes and it just made me more confused. i think a different perspective may help so i'll try imabi for a bit. TK is just so... wordy :P
imabi is alot more wordy than tae kim. trust me it's well explained but very overwhelming.

This is my impression too. That's one of the reasons why I suggested using it to explain things that may have confused you after TK. I actually prefer TK because it makes sense to me and keeps my attention because it's very succinct. Those things that don't make sense get sorted out eventually through other resources. My study strategy is to get as many different forms of language input as possible while remaining practical and functional.
lesson 5 in imabi is a lot better on my brain than lesson 4. :) lesson 5 is on nouns and pronouns (1st, 2nd and 3rd person) broken down according to level of politeness. eg. 1st person I=watashi(respectful), wagahai(polite and old fashioned), atashi(polite for women) boku(plain for men), ore(vulgar for men). there were many other words used to say i that i did not know. also plenty of words to say you and he, she or it. imabi broke this down nicely. it also goes into pluralization, speaking about oneself. why i also like imabi is it really gives good reading practice with kana and even kanji(if u're a fancy big shot that can read kanji~~which means i hate u :( ) there is very lil romaji used in the lessons after lesson 2. it gives 1 sentence with kanji, 1 sentence with kana and the english translations. and lots of vocabulary to pick up. there are revision excercises at the end of each lesson too.
does he give the answers to the revision questions though? i couldn't see them and it would be more helpful that way i think... i haven't gotten that far yet i'll have to keep plugging away. i was out of town all day yesterday and i'm not feeling up to studying today =/
yeah i don't feel much like studying tonight either. no there are no answers that i have seen so far. my guess is the answers are in the lesson and if we don't know an answer we will find it if we back track thru the lesson.
I'm trying to learn the language, but it's self-study. I basically just bought a bunch of textbooks to help me learn the language until I actually take a formal class.
most of us here are self-studying as well. i'd like to take formal lessons but there's nothing available where i live =/
welcome to the club. we're all pretty much teaching ourselves. check out previous posts from this thread was well as the resource thread, there are lots of links and info on various websites, books and app (free and paid) that members here use to for self study.
my trip next month is cancelled so i guess i don't have to rush to get to survival-level just yet. *sigh*
i saw in the rant thread. i posted a reply there. i'm really sorry the plan fell apart lady.
meh. such is life. i don't have to feel so panicked about falling behind on my lessons now at least.
